How'd you manage that?
Screwed in?

I fiddled with it for an hour or so initially in Dec. but didn't want to tear apart my 2 week old Jeep.

It was either pull the little door of, use some sort of "bonding" solution or just pull the cubby out.

Now its nearly 4months old and has a small scratch on the door from a suspected shopping trolley incident, so I haz no problem with pulling it to bits now.

Easy
8 clips on the main bezel. - 1 connector unplug
about 6 clips on the centre console - 2 connectors unplug
Pop off the shifter cover
1 screw with a "star" on the gear stick
4 7mm screws for the cubby - 3 connectors unplug

I wanted to have look behind the U-connect screen anyway. (RAX Lockpick?)
Looking to have a rear facing caravan camera without mounting extra screens everywhere.

Fitted mine here without removing anything except the felt cover under the dash.

Re: The Towing thread

Yeah mine is there too... for the time being. I just find I kick it every once in a while. It has suited me while getting the new caravan set up operationally though.

I'll probably swap it out for a TowPro shortly...

So where you have a heavier trailer (e.g. caravan) which is equipped with electric brakes, the tow vehicle is required to have a brake controller fitted which electronically applies the trailer brakes whenever you brake in the tow vehicle. Box trailers wouldn't need one, don't know about your car trailer.

The brake controller operates/controls the electronic braking system which is in the trailer itself.

All the controller does is vary the voltage output to the brakes on the trailer to suit the desired braking pressure / deceleration.

Towing up to 750kg its not needed, and most box trailers won't be fitted with electronic brakes.

A car trailer probably would be fitted with brakes since the gross weight would be quite high including a car of course.
If you are going to tow with a car loaded on it then you'll need to use the trailer brakes and if they're electronic, you'll need to use a brake controller.

With an unladen car trailer you technically wouldn't need to use it as it's <750kg.

Now, if you did connect the electronic brake controls to an unladen car trailer you would want to dial down the braking force to suit the low weight because to don't want to lock the trailer brakes every time.

This also points to the reason why we have the brake controller mounted within reach in the drivers area. You are supposed to be able to adjust the brake force setting from the drivers seat.

If you have a Mini minor on the car trailer then would dial the brake force down and if you were towing a Bentley obviously dial it for extra braking force.

Simples.

Ok there is one exception.
Some trailers might have a braking system fitted that is not electronic and does not require a controller.
My brother has a boat trailer with a "telescopic" mechanism on the tow coupling and when the momentum of the boat decelerating it compresses this telescopic coupling it applies the brakes on the trailer via hydraulics. The harder he decelerates the harder the brakes are applied. (Surge Braking system)

Re: The Towing thread

I found this spot handy as I could easily reach the brake controller on down hill sections to slightly apply braking force to 3.5 tonne van and is clear of my legs. Even on this angle of the P3 the van brakes come on with the truck brakes. ImageUploadedByJeepGarage1426754010.953865.jpgImageUploadedByJeepGarage1426754035.886746.jpg

Well if you're a betting man Jose, I'll put my money on the possibility that you've forgotten the plug located behind the left hand corner of the bumper as you were refitting it...

... or did you do the wiring mod to disable ParkSense when a trailer plug is connected?

Cheers,
Steve

Re: The Towing thread

A little off subject here, but just getting ready to head out on vacation with my CRD towing my 19' airstream for the first time. Should I tow in sport mode or regular? how about those trans and oil temps what should I expect?
