Hi Steve
With a single axle the pendulum effect from location of van loading is crucial. No extra weight at extremes of front or back of van?
I run even lower on fronts maybe 2.5-6 when WDH is on as the idea is to restore front grip of tyre 50% from WDH 50 % from increasing the tyre footprint with lower pressures. Rears are a bit high IMHO which may exacerbate porpoising due to lack of give in tyre. Try 3.2.

40mm nose down is ideal for stability of van. I started out trying to achieve level but discovered its a HR number just used for setup. How many links on HR WDH chain? I setup at aero level same as you but don't have the pendulum effect, maybe I've got a tighter WDH setup. I've recently fitted HR dual can anti sway and its fantastic in removing all sway from trucks, cross winds etc.

I'm with you on the hitch jutting out a bit BUT compared to other vehicles the distance from rear axle to hitch is much less than most other vehicles. This is the crucial dimension. 200 series and most dual cabs are up to 600mm longer in this dimension !!!! Scares the crap out of me to think of the loading going over dips and hollows.

Cheers
Max

Re: The Towing thread

I'm looking for suggestions on the mounting of various plugs on the rear of the JGC for a camper trailer. At the moment , all that I have is a flat 12 pin socket, but I would like to replace that with a round 7 pin socket (because I am thinking of using an EZ Connector which is about the same diameter as a regular round socket). In addition to this, I need an Anderson plug, and a connector for a rear view camera. I have an oem (Best Bars) tow bar. But I am having trouble figuring out where to mount all the sockets, making sure they will not ground out when close to the departure angle of the Jeep.
If someone has ideas on mounting positions I would appreciate hearing them.
Thanks,
Russell

Re: The Towing thread

I had another tab welded on to the other side of the towbar Russell. My camera's cable is "free" with some excess slack retained by shock cord. You don't get a second chance with the skinny cable!

I've seen panel mounted 4 pin video connectors too, but I can't remember if it was Jaycar, Altronics or eBay.

Cheers,
Steve

Re: The Towing thread

Thanks Steve. I had thought about getting another tab welded on, but what do you mean by "free". Just a dangling cable hanging near the towbar?

Re: The Towing thread

Yes 😳

But it's seen a bit of action already... with no problems. If/when it gets broken I'll probably fit a panel mount on the tab.

Re: The Towing thread

I think that's what will do Steve. Do you happen to have an ARB camera set up? I'm trying to figure out how to connect the S-video cable to the Jeep head unit monitor.

Re: The Towing thread

It's "composite video" yeah? You need to read the last part of my DIY Trailer Wiring thread Russell... it's all there mate. Any questions either in there or via PM.

My camera is a Safety Dave item which was fitted to the van. It's average and will be replaced.

Cheers,
Steve

Max regarding the pendulum effect, I've taken the spare off the back as a initiative in this context. A wall mount washing machine remains up back along with the ensuite. It's got to be at the front or back I guess! I only have gas bottles up front... the storage box only has light items in it. Overall I would class my loading as extremely modest.

I might go for a bit more "nose down", probably back to the height I used to tow at without the WDH. I gather I'll be abandoning the official HR set-up procedures as they're simply not working for me.

I'm running the last link of the chain, and even that results in a fairly high tension in the system. The spring bars have a noticeable bend in them. This is partly due to my "bottom mount" trailer coupling.

I'm going to try ramping up the ball weight, as I figure that I can now use the WDH to control it. I'll see what effect that has on the porpoising. I'll also get the shank drilled at the fully inserted position.

For ongoing discussion, I'll grab a photo when I hook up again during the week. I've got the boat on in anticipation of a good day tomorrow.

I presume you've checked the ball weight. Water tank/s full or empty may change things. Half full may cause sloshing to and fro.

Re: The Towing thread

The tanks are full Bob. I have a 220kg ball weight, which might have been missed above as I write the van's weights as 2.3T / 220kg. It is a measured figure. The ATM I've stated is estimated, based on a weighbridge measured figure of Tare plus water plus gas.

Early this week I'll move the shank, add ball weight and tweak the tyre pressures for another test.

Cheers,
Steve
