Re: The Towing thread

So, is it safe to assume that the 20s can handle the towing loads without any adverse effects on them?

That's what I need to know.

Thanks.

I agree with the other guys. I can't imagine what that guy was thinking to suggest that 20s would not be good for towing. However, if you would have ordered the Off-road pack, you would have got a bigger rear diff with a slightly lower ratio. This would be an advantage for towing. Also the off-road pack comes with 18's as standard but this is more for off-roading rather than towing.

WHY? GC would totally out perform both these with it's windscreen wipers tied behind it's back, dear-o-dear, Dude.

Sweet, I need some more Prado and Hiluxes to either recover or laugh at as I go past them.

Re: The Towing thread

Oops. Sorry if I've started an us v them subthread. Not my intention.

Anyway, back to the Jeep. When we were looking at a tow vehicle to buy it was a choice between the Prado (2.5t), Pajero (3t) or the Jeep (3.5t). The Pajero was the cheapest, but there were some points about it that sort of turned us off.

So, we went into the dealer expecting to do a deal on the Laredo version of the Grand Cherokee. But when browsing the vehicles on the lot we decided that the leather interior coupled with a few extra gadgets and bling moved us to sign up for the Limited.

It was only at work either yesterday or the day before that one of the guys brought up the issues with towing and the 20" wheels. And hence how I ended up here.

When we were looking at the options I never gave it a second thought about going off road or towing or whatever, thinking that it's got what we need to tow a van.

Personally, I don't care if it has plain steel rims with hub caps, as long as whatever the car is shod with is up to the task of a 2.5t caravan being towed.

Anyway, since the contracts have been signed I'm not going to worry about it, or to go back and re-negotiate. I don't want to pay more, anyway. If, after Feb 2016 when we expect to get the van (we still haven't found the right one) if any issues arise I'll deal with them, then.

I'm hoping that everyone's advice here is based on personal experience. ie. that you tow with your GC and that youve done it with the 20" wheels. I'm about to commit to a $63k (AUD) purchase this week...

Thanks again.

Re: The Towing thread

Firstly, you don't need to worry, lots of experienced users here giving first hand advice.
If for whatever reason you chose to swap to 18s, it wouldn't cost more, it would cost less. As I mentioned on Whirlpool, I did just that purely for cosmetic purposes, and part of the deal was that I knew they make money out of that swap.
Clearly you will be getting the tow hitch receiver as well. I would also recommend working into your deal, tinting on the front windows, mud flaps, and upgrading to Lux II seats. Nicer leather, but the big thing is the ventilated seats. Awesome at this time of year.

It's handy being able to see oil and transmission temps in the cluster!

It is good to hear the v6 was up to it. Did it take a big impact to fuel consumption ?

My neighbour has a 20ft plus something big ass van that he tows around the country with a limited, 20 inch wheels. It would be well on its way to over 3 tonne. And I woke today to notice he was gone again.... Lucky bastard.

3t? Wow. I won't be going that big. Missus is interested in the Euro made vans, in particular the Baileys. Most of them are around the 2t mark with a few under that. But having the JGC means effortless towing, I s'pose.
