Re: The Towing thread

My dual axle Jayco Expanda comes in at 2.4T loaded up.
I tow it very comfortably with the 20" rims on mine.
Never had an issue, you'll be fine.

Yes, it was rather thirsty. I averaged around 18L/100km. It's a good thing the car has a big tank!

I don't know if any 4x4 would've done that bog hole any better (or worse).

Certainly, I would not have attempted it. And they were driving off of the established crossing, anyway.

Re: The Towing thread

Back to towing, what's the best weight distribution hitch to get?

Thanks

Re: The Towing thread

Depends a lot on the height of your trailer coupling, and the type of coupling itself. What type of coupling do you have, and is it mounted on the top or bottom of the drawbar? Also, do you want sway control?

Cheers,
Steve

Re: The Towing thread

Barboots, I haven't bought the van yet. But one that we are looking at has a tare of around 1800kg, ATM of 2300 kg and a ball weight of around 190kg.

Re: The Towing thread

Martin with those weights you might find you can manage without, but with our similar load I've found that the reduction in porpoising (nodding front to back) makes it worthwhile on long trips. I hate the things, so take that as an endorsement.

The choice of "which system" must be made in conjunction with:

- the coupling type and articulation;
- the coupling position on the drawbar;
- your preference, if any, for mechanical sway control;
- your budget;
- what appeals.

I save money where I can so I can spend it where I want... and bought a second hand HR Standard (trunnion bar) system for $150. It works fine with the van's DO35 off-road coupling, and whilst the top end HR sway control appeals, our van has Stability Control which I believe is well enough considering its length.

Everyone will have a different brief. Very few will have the same opinions due to the numerous variables in play.

What sort of van are you looking at?

Cheers,
Steve

This is what I will be towing, have yet to try out the Jeep. 23' center console that weighs between 5300-5800 lbs. depending on how I have it loaded.

Surprised he didn't tell you that you need to have a manual transmission as well.

BTW, mate has a GC Summit with 20inch rims, tows a van 3.5t van. No issues.

Only possible disadvantage with 20inch might be availability of a tyre if you blow one in a remote area. But I think the 18inch is probably just as rare.
Anyway if your a grey nomad in a van why would you care if you have to wait a day or two.
