Re: The Towing thread

Bob I read it that the vehicle light is going out, hence the loss of trailer lights. Yeah nah???

Dastrix LEDs draw little power, so it's strange that they could overload the car's circuits. That said, the driver circuits in LED lights can be prone to generating electrical noise. I wonder if the car is getting interference from the trailer and that is psyching it out?

As far as interface boxes, I know Hayman Reese make one... but I also believe that they have had "some issues" with them on Grands. I'd just wire in some relays myself. How handy are you?

Cheers,
Steve

Re: The Towing thread

Thanks Bob, ill do that!

Hi Steve, so what im learning is that you dont actually NEED one? Makes sense. The trailer has been faultless for the last few weeks. Perhaps I just indeed have dirty contacts (trailer does sit outside). Ill give it a clean and see how i go.

Re: The Towing thread

Reversing Cameras for Caravans. I'm not sure if I've asked or if I've seen anything previously but I'm interested to know how you guys who've done this have mounted the screen.

I've heard some who've placed them on the rear view mirror. I had a look at mine just now. What the mirror itself is affixed to is huge. And if it had to be removed I'm not sure how it's done.

Any tips on this muchly appreciated.

Re: The Towing thread

Do you want a reversing camera or a rear view camera? I've connected my reversing camera to the Uconnect screen... it comes on with reverse, so is only suitable for that. Alternatively you could buy the Silver level Customtronix and be able to activate the camera at any time.

IMO these are superior options to having a monitor tacked on to the interior.

Cheers,
Steve

Re: The Towing thread

I have 4 cameras on my caravan. One each side, so that I can see down both sides of the van for other cars, and 2 on the rear, where 1 is used as a rear view and the 2nd points downwards and used for parking. I have them fed into the jeep by 4, 7 pin din plugs. These in turn run to a box under the passenger seat and connects one cable to a 7" monitor which sits on the dash. From there I can monitor 1 or 2 or 4 cams at once.

Re: The Towing thread

Allypally, how did you run the cables for the cameras? Are they hidden or exposed? And what system are you using?

Re: The Towing thread

The cams were installed during the build, so all inside the caravan walls. They come together near the hitch.
I got my hardware from Safety Dave (Wholesale :: Caravan Reversing Camera Kits, Fire Extinguishers and First Aid Kits :: Safety Dave Australia) who appears to be very well accepted within the caravan fraternity.

Thanks Steve but I'm pretty sure it's just a bad connection. If I give the trailer plug a bit of a wiggle it's fine again for a while. The thing is that Kimberly Kampers use a trailer cable that's about 15mm dia feeding into a 7-pin large round plug. Not realising that, I specified a 7-pin flat because that's what the Jeep's trailer harness has. So now I have a 15mm cable attached to a puny 7-pin flat plastic plug. It's asking for trouble and that's what I got so I'm converting to the 7-pin large round.

Re: The Towing thread

hi all,
i've just got back from a 15000km holiday towing my caravan. at times up hills the water temp gauge got up as far as the white line abutting the red "hot" segment. the water overheating light wasn't on.
would anyone be concerned about that? 'm not sure what options there would be to improve the cooling.
i have an arb bar with a winch but that doesn't seem to block much air to the radiator.

Nothing to worry about, happens to all of us. No reports of anyone actually overheating.

Agreed. I would expect it get hot towing a caravan up a hill. A tail wind could also cause it to run hot but as long as the overheating light doesn't come on, you are fine. Once upon a time one would drive till steam fogged up the windscreen.
