My only concern with these "magic box" and other systems is that instead of plug and socket or soldered splices, they sometimes use the quick and easy Scotchlok splices. These are fine for audio and phone lines but I don't think they are quite up to the rigour of off-road and towing.

Back in another life I worked as a motor mechanic for a GM (Holden) dealership. The use of such connectors at the time was standard practice.

I don't recall anyone having problems with them back then. Today, what with all this smart wiring, Can-Bus and so on perhaps they aren't up to the task?

Re: The Towing thread

As technology has developed, manufacturers nowadays use much thinner insulation and core on their wiring, plus lower voltages down to 4.5 v for different functions within the control circuit.
Jamming a Scotchlok down onto existing wiring to get a tap doesn't guarantee the best possible connection and certainly isn't considered best practice.

What might be quick and easy for the installer doesn't always represent a long term reliable outcome for the customer.
I agree with Bob - they won't go on our vehicle.

Re: The Towing thread

Thanks for the photos guys. I've decided to get a Mopar bar, unlikely but you never know when I might want to get a long range tank.

I've been quoted $1,100 supply and fit from Narellan and hopefully it will be fitted in about two weeks.

As I recall, the rear tow hook has to be taken off to install the tow-bar but it can be put back on. You need to tell them what you want done with it. There are 3 options: put it back on, give it to you or throw it away. As I understand it, the latter is often the default.

Re: The Towing thread

I have a hitch receiver recovery point as well. Happy to have the jeep hook as an extra option. I've used it in the past to quickly pull a ute out of a muddy paddock and was way easier than getting all my recovery gear out.

Re: The Towing thread

Just put the snatch strap into the receiver and use the pin to restrain it. Unless you're doing some ultra serious recovery, the pin will not bend.

Given you have an adaptor, why don't you just leave it in the receiver when out in the wild?

Re: The Towing thread

I've never had to use the rear hook and as Barboots says the hitch receiver works if a tad more fiddly. However, the attachment post for the rear hook, I've found as a good spot for attaching an 175A Anderson socket for the camper trailer. It's a bit far off-centre so the cable gets a bit stretched when doing tight right hand manoeuvres but so far it has done the job.
