Even worse that this was a "caravan dealer"........we've flogged certain CJD dealers on this forum for incompetence, bad workmanship and bad attitudes (and deservedly so), but you would expect a dealer in caravans would know something about a brake controller and where best to install it.
The suggestion to install any controller under the seat is grossly negligent in my opinion and I would run, not walk away from that party - let alone allow them to touch my vehicle.
An electric brake controller is a fundamental component of any towing setup, whether it is proportional or non proportional. It is a requirement for either type that they are able to be manually activated (by a lever on the front for the Tekonsha or a push button for the Redarc non proportional).
I have a Tekonsha P3 mounted in the cubby (again in my opinion the best of the controllers out there and essentially the same price as the Redarc), and it works fine there for my purposes. After the initial setup i now rarely touch it and it just does its job when the van is connected.
Bigskiddy, there are plenty of posts about installing a P3 in the cubby, and the correct way to connect up a controller so as not to conflict with the vehicle electrics - if you need more info or assistance, come back here and ask, there is a great depth of experience available from people who have sucessfully done just what you are looking to do.
