I had trouble with the bolt under the bar stripping the thread in the shaft. I therefore had an extra nut welded to the shifted the the bolt and lock nut added.
The threaded shaft is too thin.

Re: The Towing thread

I was in Battery World, Hornsby to get some rechargeable AAAs and noticed that they have a good supply of 6B&S, 4B&S and heavier battery cable along with battery isolators, Anderson plugs and other auto electrical bits an pieces. I wish I had known that before.

Re: The Towing thread

I have been trying to get a pic of this for ages, it was placed awkwardly on my door sill so harder to get a pic.

Re: The Towing thread

was towing a car trailer the other day.. and there was a lot of clunking noises from the back tow bar with acceleration, and deceleration. is that normal ?

Monocoque / unibody vehicles will transmit more noise from the towing system than ladder frame vehicles as the bodywork isn't isolated from the chassis by rubber mounts. Making sure that your receiver adaptor is snug in the receiver will help, as will making sure you've got an adequate proportion of ball weight.

Another reason to miss my old girl... though the hills will make me forget her

Cheers,
Steve

Re: The Towing thread

hmmm with the amount of banging and clunking i swear i thought my car trailer was going to just disappear from my rear mirror ! i'll get around to climbing underneath the car one day to check all the bolts are still there, cos it sounded or felt like there was something loose ??

the banging and car jolting just doesnt seem normal

Did you have the interference bolt wound up onto the receiver adaptor? If the receiver adaptor is loose you'll really hear about it over bumps!

Cheers,
Steve

Re: The Towing thread

?? excuse my ignorance but what's a interference bolt ?

i put the bolt thru the receiver adaptor and the circ clip in the bolt hole. i have no idea what is causing the banging an clunking.

I think Barboots is referring to the bolt underneath the hitch receiver. I had to tighten mine up to reduce any rattles in the receiver.

Ah huh. If you look underneath the receiver (the square hole in towbar) you'll see a bolt and locking nut which you can wind up to apply pressure on the receiver adaptor (the bit with the towball). The official line is to create a "just enough" friction fit for the receiver adaptor, but I typically snug mine up hard to stop any movement at all.

Cheers,
Steve
