Re: The Towing thread

There seems to be some highly divergent views on the use of the interference bolt, so let me add another one. When towing, I get a little knocking when the bolt is loose. Tightening the bolt gets rid of the knocking however it needs to be tightened only enough to take up the slack. There is no need to torque it. It doesn't participate at all in the towing effort. However it will work loose so it does need to be locked.

Yep, that's the way its always been in the Barboots family Bob... just snug it up and lightly pinch up the locking nut.

I've battled against dozens of excessively torqued ones to remove the adaptor to effect recoveries using the towing system.

Cheers,
Steve

now you got me worried about the loose bolts from the dealer
only had it fitted about 2 wks ago
Put a pair of undies on your ball before you connect your trailer, will stop it rattling.

I was waiting for someone else to start it.

Typically, when connecting my trailers, I already have undies covering my balls. Bigskiddy is there a missing "s" typo, or do you only have one? Maybe ask your dealer as I'm sure that two is standard equipment. Lastly, mine also never rattle, even when fully unladen.

Cheers,
Steve

Hahahaha.......knowing Jeep they would only have one. If you want another you have to wait 18weeks while they manufacture and ship to Oz.

If the rattle is coming from the ball, and not the tongue in the bar - fold a plastic shopping bag over as many times as you need, then place it over the ball before you hook up.

The plastic acts like a spacer and also a lubricant

Re: The Towing thread

In the major 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee information thread, Snuke posted a link to a 2014 US diesel owners manual supplement that doesn't get distributed here apparently.
Thanks also to Snuke for posting the link.
I posted this comment in that thread, but it is worth inclusion in this thread because it has some relevance…..
"There is some interesting information in there - and in particular I noticed this little snippet in the Towing section:
"If the gross trailer weight is 3,500 lbs (1 587 kg) or more, it is mandatory to use a weight-distributing hitch to ensure stable handling of your vehicle."

In Australia the words used are "recommended" and the weight is 2268kg."

Quite a difference.

Re: The Towing thread

All Aus cars come with the Tow Pack installed, in the US it’s an option, hence the difference in recommended weight.

Re: The Towing thread

yep, i knew our cars come with the tow pack, but do you have a reference as to where the supplement notes the difference? - I couldn't find one.

Re: The Towing thread

No, haven’t looked. It is irrelevant to me what the US requirements are, for all we know there are some US legal things involved with their weight ratings. Don’t know, don’t care, I only need to be concerned with what is relevant to Aus builds.
