Re: The Towing thread

HELP

Hi All,

I have run all my wires and was about to terminate my brake active and brake controller wires and noticed that the drain wire the dealership left hanging out has been spliced into the Pin 5 Blue which is the Brake Controller wire which was connected, I thought this was supposed to be spliced into the Brake Active ???

Cheers

Re: The Towing thread

Chocco that's not so clear... do you mean that there's a blue wire terminated on the trailer socket already? If so, you'll find that it just runs along the trailer harness, but will not be connected.

Cheers,
Steve

Re: The Towing thread

Pin 4 isn't trailer brake either.

Yes thats correct.

I was under the impression that the drain wire they leave out is spliced into the Brake Active, not just a wire run from Pin 5 and left hanging out.

As I have already pre wired everything and cut to length, can I just splice into the Red Brake Active at the socket ???

Re: The Towing thread

Mate could you clarify "drain wire"? I don't want to put you on a bum steer!

Pin 5 should never go straight to the brake light wire. If you connected a trailer with electric brakes, touching the brake pedal would lock up the trailer axle very abruptly! No sparky would do this.

Do you have a test light or meter?

Cheers,
Steve

Re: The Towing thread

Sorry Steve,

Bad terminolgy from me with reference to drain wire, so lets just forget that.

I have it all wired up and all works brakes, indicators, lights, except when you activate the brakes in conjunction with the lights being on, the lights dim on the van with the brake lights working, everything on the car is working as it should be.

Invidually everything works no problems, there is obviuosly a voltage drop somewhere, the missus has had to go down the street so have lost the car for now.

I remember reading somewhere about the van drawing to much current and changing to LEDS, but the van is already except for the side lights. I will bring the Clamp meter home tomorrow and check the current draw. Or maybe a bad earth, I did notice on the van plug there is no earth return ??

Any other suggestions.

Re: The Towing thread

Yeah it could be pulling the brake light earth through the tail light circuit or something like that. It definitely could be volt drop too. I'd wire in an earth wire from the trailer plug to the trailer chassis as a minimum. My boat has an earth to every fixture, which is nice if you can spare the effort... though it's more critical for immersible stuff.

FWIW, you can't expect acceptable performance from a trailer lighting circuit if the earth back to the vehicle is via the ball. Actually... I wouldn't expect it to work much at all. Consider braking performance with an erratic earth

So back to work. You don't need the car to work on the trailer

Cheers,
Steve
