Re: The Towing thread

Guys,
Excuse me if the question might sound silly to you seasoned towers, but can you turn the tow hitch upside down (replacing ball to the top) to give a little more height. Both my boat trailer and box trailer are dual axle and do not site totally level (nose in) when connected to the car. The box trailer especially has scrubbed the back set of tyres and they are shot. The tow bar is genuine Mopar (BestBars). Does this reduce the allowable weight on the ball?

Cheers.

Re: The Towing thread

I've had mine turned over from day one (for the extra hight) 3 years on and no problems, have towed our Aussieswag camper trailer well over 10,000km like this

Re: The Towing thread

I run my tow hitch up side down and its make the ball height perfect for my trailer. It is a 2.5 tonne ski boat and I have had no issues at all.
Even though I have done this I would also like to know if it is OK to flip it.

Same here - to level out the camper. It's hard to imagine that there's anything wrong with putting it in either way. Mine just did a few thousand km on corrugated
roads in the Kimberley, with no observable issues. They usually come separately from the tow bar anyway (at least mine did), and there are no "warnings" about which way to insert the hitch.
Thanks,
Russell

Will be trying this again at Xmas on the Hume to see if the Jeep is any different.
Good observation! I imagine a tail wind could would do it too. If the tail wind was about as fast as the car, there would be no cooling at all except for when the fan cuts in. Combine this with following a truck up a long incline on a hot day with the air-con on and sure there will be a temperature spike.

Re: The Towing thread

I has some new Narva LED tail lights fitted to my boat trailer today by Peter at Pulse Electrical 44 Carrington Rd Castle Hill. Good job, nicely fitted with split conduit and heat shrink. Happy to recommend them.

Re: The Towing thread

I find it a pain to fit the two trailer D-shackles into the eye holes of the Best Bars tow bar particularly the one next to the trailer socket so I invested in a couple of rated bow-shackles. I got them through gotstock.com.au for $18.68 shipped. They have the raised lettering which I figure is a sign of quality. They are 11mm S-grade with a 1.5t WLL. I chose these because the bolt size is 13mm which fits snugly into the tow bar holes. A layer of insulating tape made them even snugger. Spacers would reduce any rattling further. I fed the bolts up from the bottom so as not to crowd the top and secured the bolts with tie wire (Riggers refer to this as mousing).

Those with 3t caravans needn't worry. A WLL(working load limit) of 1.5t equates to about a 9t MBL(max breaking load) although the regs require that each of the chains must be able to take the full load of the trailer. Overkill IMHO but that's another story

Re: The Towing thread

Are you leaving them attached and using another pair of shackles to connect your chains? I've read that this isn't compliant... at least in some instances. Apparently a totally compliant solution is to attach hammerlocks to the towbar...

... not that I really see much difference between the two methods!

Cheers,
Steve
