Hey guys just wondering if anyone has followed the lead of those in the states and tinted their tails?
Not too sure on the legality so if anyone can clear it up that would be good (particularly from QLD)
IMO it looks nice, only considering doing it a light tint but
I agree it looks good, but.... You are trading vanity for safety, is it really worth it ?
Aside from being illegal, it will reduce the tail light illumination.
Any cop will pull you over for it and give you a defect.
Yeah, our vehicle standards handbook is a direct copy from QLD, and it's an immediate defect (or fail at roadworthy inspection) if there is any tint applied to any light. It looks cool, but is it cool enough to risk yours and your family's safety, and the chance of your car being taken off the road, having to remove the tint, pay for an inspection, then wait in the queue at Queensland Transport for an hour and a half?
Some manufacturers have slightly tinted, or smoked, taillights already. You can fit those legally as they comply with ADR's. I dont think Jeep has tinted tail lights on any model so it's not legal.
Any compliant tinted/smoked tail lights will have been designed to fit within the ADR limits of light output for tails and brake lights. If you apply a tint to any ADR compliant tail light after the fact then you reduce the light output which can be dangerous and result in the rear end of your pretty Jeep being crumpled.
Thanks guys
So even if it is just a light smoking of the lights its a defect? is there a specific light output that needs to be reached?
i do realise that having a large tint on the lights is dangerous and i am merely pondering the idea, and most likely not going to tint at all...
ive had my tail lights tinted for 2 years never got pulled over and i have my head lights tinted....just saying. i did 2 coats of vht nite shade and u can still see the red a bit and just taped off the white just go for it man

Thats the difference between America and Australia. In the US you can get away with that. However, in Australia, they are a little more demanding on safety issues.
FWIW, you can have opaque covers over your headlights so long as they are readily removable without tools and do not cover your indicators. Tails are just a no go.
I remember reading once that removing the light and putting a stocking over it has the same effect, it'd probably look really shoddy but...
once again thanks for all the info guys
