So, I wanted to put a tow bar on my 2012 CRD 3.0 S Limited, but no one anywhere would tell me it's possible. The S Limited has an additional trim panel / diffuser which extends the size of the rear bumper.
So, I decided to give it a go.
The bar I selected was a Bosal / Oris 050-653 -Removable swan neck ball. I selected this having examined the detailed drawings of others, including my normal first choice Witter. I was looking for minimal bumper problems.
The good news, it fits and only required a bumper cut of 100mm (across) by 25mm (deep) along the hidden underside of the bumper with diffuser mounted.
For wiring I selected a dedicated wiring kit with 13 pin socket. Non-dedicated kits are a very bad idea on a vehicle that is so dependant on CAN bus etc... make the investment.
The job - took 10 hours - yes TEN - I could do it in 6 now I've done it once.
Removing rear bumper - requires controlled aggression to remove side wheel arch trims.
Removing standard tow hook - This was fitted to the car before the exhaust pipes and was a total fXXker to get off as very restricted access to the bolt heads.
Removing internal boot elements and the internal side panel, which has many suicidal clips attaching it.
Enlarging a 25mm oval hole to a 40mm round hole to accept the waterproof grommet.
Overall, a very neat solution, but not a job for the meak... and I would expect any cheapy mobile fitting to moan and mess it up...
