Re: Towbars in Australia

Thanks Bob for the info and pics.....when I installed my brake controller I tapped into the dealer harness stop light wiring for the controller brake switch and ran the blue brake wire all the way back from the controller to the van plug.

Likely you also noticed the scary 10g self tappers that comprise the cargo area tiedowns! You also found a number of spots to hide accessory stuff in under that "load hider". My compressor went nicely down there.

Without knowing what the supply was for the red and black wires into the plug, I'm not sure I would trust them to supply enough current to run a van fridge or charge a battery via an Andersen plug.

I guess if someone had the plug exposed it would be easy enough to check the plug with a meter to see if it was active, to prove or disprove the point a reflash is required.

Nope, tried that. All their towbars are under contract to various car importers as "genuine" parts so they can't or wont sell direct.

Any chance of a pic of your compressor installation, air take off point etc?

I was looking at tow bar's straight from china. I was quoted $370 ($150 for tow bar + postage) delivered to Sydney. 2nd link : although US tow bar not ADR complaint in Australia, it looks fantastic with the bezal.

Hi Fix69er Just a couple of Questions for you about your Bars from China, I have just had a look at the Links your right the US one looks good. For the Australian one do you know what weight it will take i could not find that info on there and also would they sell just one to you as i noticed that they had a MOQ of 10. they have a lot of gear for the GC there would be good to pick the items you want and get them sent over.

I can't post pics Bob, (think it relates to my membership level) but my compressor is a Black Max unit, wired out to an Andersen plug that swaps for the second battery DC/DC charger feed . I posted pics of my module in this thread (username JnK) on this forum: http://www.ausjeepoffroad.com/forum/...=115442&page=2 The switch on the compressor is left on so when I plug in the AP the compressor runs. I use the spiral wound air hose that tucks in beside the spare (I've taken the plastic bins and the foam insert in the centre of the tyre out and that gives heaps of room).
I've also seen a post (maybe on here or AusJeep) where the compressor and an air tank was installed in the rear body space for the subwoofer. t looked a pretty good job. The days of quick air up are past for me so a tank wasn't an issue.

It sits just under the left hand rear quarter window. It would have been hard for them to have picked a more inaccessible spot. The third photo shows the number of panels that had to be removed to get at it. I'm not sure I would want to entrust this task to a dealer. I'm thinking, when the time comes, I might do the install myself and get a reflash at the next service.

There are 9 wires into the plug. I'm guessing that is the normal 7 for blinkers L/R, brake light, tail light, auxiliary, electric brakes and earth. The other two are red and black and slightly thicker than the rest, probably for charging a trailer battery.

The fourth photo shows what I found when I removed the "load floor gap hider", the trim around the spare tyre. This is the controller for the dealer installed backup sensors. It was just lying loose. Another fine example of dealer workmanship. I tidied up the wiring and fixed the unit to a vertical metal panel behind the right hand utility bin using HD adhesive velcro.

BTW, Best Bars NZ do indeed make the Mopar towbar for Australia but they cannot supply direct.
Thanks BobT, with your INVALUABLE assistance, I found the grey plug.!! Do you have any ideas where to purchase its mate (plug and or harness) Is there a part number. Also, do you know if there is a similar socket (plug) for the trailer brake controller?
Assistance like this is so good.....

Re: Towbars in Australia

The tow bars I've seen fitted by the dealer, (vehicle on the showroom floor), are HR and is pretty ordinary job compared to what you see fitted in the US. The bar / receiver seems low and the bumper section cut out has no bezel, just a bit of pinch weld pushed on to hide the cut. The cut out is also right through rather than a "window". The wiring connector installation / bracket also looks amateurish to say the least and is tucked in under and difficult to reach.
I have instructed the dealer I want the Mopar unit with the bezel. Dealer has not replied yet. I'm currently in Iraq and trying to do this via emails, who knows what I'll end up with, but I don't want an HR unit and a bumper that is cut right through.

Re: Towbars in Australia

I've just had a Mopar bar installed by Jeep and looks great and I'm happy though there is no bezel and yes they've used the the pinch weld over the cut so it's not just a HR thing.

Not sure if you're going to get the bezel as this appears to be a USA thing. All Mopar bars for Aust are build in NZ by Best Bars and I don't think they've factored in the bezel.

I agree though, the US bars with the bezel really adds a finishing touch.

Let us know if you get your bezel.

Cheers

Re: Towbars in Australia

Thanks AussieWK2, and all other contributors to the tow bar questions, - It looks as though there will be no bezel, as I assume the Mopar bar will in fact be a Best Bar NZ unit, therefore no bezel.

Does anyone know why the US version is non compliant, and why HR and Best Bar's products require the bumper to be cut right out instead of using the bezel to finish things off? Also the wiring connector , where does this end upo being located, the US version right next to the receiver very accessible. Appreciate If someone could post a picture or two of the finished products.
Cheers from Iraq.

The US one is too high. The hitch receiver on the Mopar/Best Bars and Hayman Reese bars comes out below the bumper. The bumper is only removed for installation, then put back on. There is only a small section cut out around the receiver like on most cars. Not a huge issue.

I have contacted the china manufactures, they are happy to air freight 1 towbar and any other combination of GC accessories (less than MOQ) to me.

First link is a class 3 tow bar Class 3 up to 2300 Kg. Looks like the same item as.

http://www.etrailer.com/Trailer-Hitc...eid=2012303825

( need to confirm this with seller in china)

Second link is the factory mopar (82212180 ) one which is Class4 up to 4500 Kg

Note: I have not purchased anything directly from china yet, but I am considering buying accessories direct from china as it make sense to buy directly from china at lower cost compared to buying the same item from US.
