Towbars in Australia

So there doesn't seem to be a thread looking at the current tow bar options.

What have people done? Has anyone ordered the gear from the US and fitted themselves?

Re: Towbars in Australia

don't know why the US ones are not used here.
There must be some ADR that it does not meet.
It looks like it is mounted higher. May be to high.

I put a bit of time into this as initially i thought the dealer price for the bar and wiring was a ripoff (still do).
In September I priced getting a US bar delivered here to around $650 and thought that would be OK.
I checked a local HR dealer for a price that was around $950 fitted and wired but he didn't want to do the job due to issues with canbus wiring systems and previous problems that cost him money. (warning bells started). I went to another HR dealer - similar story.
I checked with HR and they do make a bar for the WK2, rrp @ $708 + fitting. It comes with HR "smart click wiring".
Bit more checking and found that due to the canbus any trailer wiring must be reflashed by the dealer so the PCM will recognise. Didn't get a price for this but could allocate a chunk of dollars. I know HR are a reputable Aus company but I didn't want to get into any bunfight.
Around that time on another Aus forum there were a number of CRD's that had non start issues as well as flat batteries. There was some conjecture these could be related to brake controller and trailer wiring conflicts with the Jeep canbus.
It all got into the realm of too hard and too risky for me so finally bit the bullet and placed an order with the dealer @ $1050 to fit and wire tow bar before delivery. The job will be warranted.
The potential saving to me of maybe $300 just did not stack up against the possibility for the package to go pear shaped.
If I was to have benefit of hindsight i would dig a bit harder at order time to ensure a bar and wiring was part of any deal.

Re: Towbars in Australia

I ordered mine from the dealer, they will fit it before delivery. Much easier that way and like John47 said it will be covered by warranty.

Re: Towbars in Australia

I have the OEM Mopar towbar on my JGC and it is a nice unit. I towed my mates 25' Bertram the other day, about 3ton including trailer. Only problem was all the chrome has worn off the towball. Aside from that the JGC did a fantastic job and towed the boat without any problem. I guess that having the piece of mind knowing it is properly engineered and fitted makes me feel safer.

Re: Towbars in Australia

One thing to watch for though is when talking to the dealer about fitting a tow bar - be sure a Mopar or genuine bar is documented.
Since ordering mine (and being interested) I have looked at a couple of bar fit ups at several unrelated dealers (one in NSW and one in Vic) and to my surprise both were "Best Bars" manufacture out of NZ. My question to the salesman was answered in both places pretty much the same - "that's what we fit as a dealer fit bar."
AFAIK the manufacturer is reputable - maybe they are making the bar for Mopar in Aus/NZ. Their website quotes Chrysler/Jeep as a "partner".
Or me being cynical - maybe the dealers can get a good price on an aftermarket bar and just fit it up. It would likely never be questioned.
Mine is written up as "genuine" so it will be interesting to see what is actually fitted. It's the sort of thing I probably wouldn't create a bunfight over as long as it was a quality item.

Re: Towbars in Australia

Mine says Genuine also, so I'll be watching this also.. The "best bar" site outlines the bar is ~ $970 fitted. I was charged $1212 for the stated genuine bar.

Re: Towbars in Australia

Good info John47, thanks. I've been tossing up which way to go but I'll get the dealer to supply and fit the genuine Mopar at the 10k service in 5k's time.

hmmm
comes back to me being cynical.......
While travelling before Christmas I called in at a dealer in NSW as I hadn't seen a tow bar fitted WK2 locally and as mentioned was surprised to see a "Best Bars" sticker. That prompted me to visit another dealer in Vic where again the same bar was fitted.
Strikes me as more than a coincidence - hence i thought it was worthwhile posting in an Aus tow bar thread.
I'm a suspicious bugger....

Re: Towbars in Australia

Hi All,

Anyone happen to know if It's fitted and not in use can you still see if the presence of the tow bar, or can you simply remove the tow hitch/tongue and replace the plastic?

Edit after seeing the us vers and it not meeting ADR rules could someone throw a pic of their Hamen&resece tow bar on this thread....please?

Thanks
Oz
