Tyres - different specs for different countries?

I have placed an order for a GC and I am on the look out for some tyres hoping to swap out the Michelin or Kumho when I get the vehicle.

I have ORAII so I am on 18" rims and I am going to stay with the OEM size. I have been using the Pirelli Scorpion ATR in one of my vehicle and I am pretty happy with them. They are available in the US in 265/60R18 however not in Australia. I rung the head office of Pirelli AU today to see if they have plan to bring them in and the person on the phone was saying he could see them in their system as being in, from memory "pre-production". To cut the long story short he thinks the AU version of the tyre would be different to the US version due to the different in climate, namely the compound.

Does any know if this would be the case?

Re: Tyres - different specs for different countries?

I believe this to be true. Different driving conditions all around the world due to temperatures, road composition, offroad terrain etc. so it would make sense to make the compound of the rubber harder/softer depending to give the tyres similar wear in different markets.
BUT, the scorps are available here in different sizes so they would presumably have created the correct compound for Australia, so why couldnt they just transfer that to a different size?
In the end, all it comes down to is demand. Pirelli obviously just don't see it viable to bring the size here.

Re: Tyres - different specs for different countries?

I had a good run out of Pirelli Scorpions on a Patrol, and enquired from Tirerack in the US about 6 months ago regarding purchase and shipping of a set of 265x60x18's to Australia.
They emailed back they were not permitted to sell Pirelli outside the US - also applied to Yokohama.

You would buy Pirelli's after the F1 at Silverstone on the weekend. I know, I know, it's different, but it wasn't a good look!

There are a few companies that does parallel importing eg International Tyre Trader and I was going to check if they can get them.

Re: Tyres - different specs for different countries?

I had 3 damaged tyres, yes 3! Had to get the jeep towed to a tyre shop within 10ks. Thank you for that Jeep assist.
However getting decent tyres in an emergency weas impossible. The shop, Jax at Haberfield NSW, lent me a crappy Hyundai accent so I could get to an important meeting, but were only able to get me a set of Bridgestone D92 in the 265 50R20 spec. Nott happy ith these tyres at all. Problem is they could not even get get Kuhmo, let alone a more serious 4x4 tyre.

I would, and I wouldn't mount a tyre designed for the left on the right , or vice versa, below the recommended min pressure and on a stupid camber.

Re: Tyres - different specs for different countries?

Good news, Pirelli AU now lists the Scorpion ATR in 265/60R18 110H.

Just in time for Nov delivery.

I was trying to find a suitable thread to post my question in. This is as close as it gets, I think:

I have a MY14 on order with ORA2. One of the first things I'm going to do when it arrives is ditch the Michelins. I've had really good results with D694's on my Prado, so I thought D697LT's would go well on the GC.

I'm getting conflicting info from tyre retailers. Some say the LT 265/60 R18's are available, while others say not. They're listed on the Bridgestone AU site, so I'm confused........

So, has anyone here fitted D697LT's yet? If so, what size did you fit?

Re: Tyres - different specs for different countries?

FYI - Checked with my usual tyre supplier, ATRs in 265/60R18 are not in country yet, ETA is late Oct.
