Wheel arch plastic bung

Hi,

Has anyone else had the hard plastic bung thing the size of a soft ball in the front wheel arch fall out and does anyone know what purpose they serve?
I've lost one and I'm just wondering if this is a common thing. I'm thinking about getting rid of them for a more permanent solution, I don't like the idea of a rock damaging the cable behind the bung because one fell out while offroad.
Pic of the plastic thing I'm talking about.

Re: Wheel arch plastic bung

Oh yeah, you can't just buy the plastic bit either according to my local dealership, you have to buy a whole new wheel arch liner to get a new one.

If it fell off, then warranty.

Re: Wheel arch plastic bung

My dealership pretty much said I wouldn't have a chance with getting it replaced under warranty. They reckon jeep Australia would just say a stick or something knocked it out when I was off-road and I'd have to prove there was a design flaw with it.
As it happens I need a whole new wheel arch liner anyway so I didn't worry about pushing the issue. By the look of it, it hasn't happened to anyone else so hopefully it was a one off.

Re: Wheel arch plastic bung

Interesting. How can they prove a stick dislodged it? The same argument could be that "it was never installed correctly, so simply fell out".
Persue it. If they reject it, ask for the rejection in writing.

The burden of proof should be on the dealership. Oz has seen loads of rain and flooding, especially in Queensland and New South Wales. I don't see how they could prove you weren't just using a dirt road rather than off road maneuvers. I would look to a salvage yard online or locally but keep pressing the dealer.

Re: Wheel arch plastic bung

I'll look into it further next break. The other thing is, I have a bullbar so the bottom section of the liners have been cut off to fit the bar, so I wouldn't be surprised if they turned around and said the non-jeep modification caused it...
Thanks Barboots, so I'm not alone. The liner I'm getting from Wanneroo jeep is $189, I think.

Re: Wheel arch plastic bung

Well I didn't end up taking it any further, I got another plastic cap with my wheel liner so it wasn't worth the hassle for a spare cap. After changing out the liner I have to say those things are flimsy and cheap but really easy to replace.
If you've ever wondered what's behind those liners...

Re: Wheel arch plastic bung

That pretty much answers the question of driving around without them... with a resounding "no".

Provides plenty of access if you want to drill the firewall for anything. I wonder if a bit of extra sound deadening there would help with tyre roar? I get a bit more than I'd like when the bitumen is coarse.

Re: Wheel arch plastic bung

Thanks for the pics.
How much work is involved in getting them in and out?

Thanks in advance!
Cheers

Re: Wheel arch plastic bung

The biggest part of the job is removing the wheel to get full access to the liner (you might be able to do it with the wheel on, if you turn the wheel full lock one way then full lock the other way to get to the front and back clips). After that it's just a matter of pulling out about a dozen of those plastic black clips (same clips that hold on the lower air dam) and then the liner just comes straight out, putting it back in is just as easy.
