For the past few weeks my engine light has been coming on intermittently, but the last 2 days has been on all the time. Wonder what has gone wrong now?.
Fuel cap? Our old WH threw the CEL (assuming it's hard on, not blinking) when the rubber seal gave way. Emission issue of course after it did that. A quick fix ensued.
I had an intermittent engine light problem - happened on the Kalumburu road in the Kimberly. Seemed to be triggered when I hit bumps. After a sat phone call to a service agent in Broome, I lived with it til I got there. Turned out to be a dirty O2 sensor. About the same time, we intermittently lost 4wd - which turned out to be a dirty wheel speed sensor. It's a worry, all these electronics....
I have had the same situation a few times of late. I purchased a code reader late last year to try to understand the problem. 3.6l Laredo from late 2011.
For my error - It seems that the O2 sensor in front of the cat converter will have readings that vary based upon throttle etc but the O2 sensor at the rear of the cat should be fairly constant and if it in not, the error is recorded and the light comes on. After a number of engine starts the light will go off though the error record is maintained. I have chosen to ignore that error at this point and definitely not rush to a dealer.
I had been through near 2 years of problems from just before the first service, that had the light flashing on multiple occasions and ended up with the heads, the cat and multiple O2 sensors replaced and was still getting the light flashing and the vehicle vibrating due to cylinder misfires, then finally the transmission controller was replaced and things settled down until the recent situation above. It has 94K kilometres on the odo now.
The lease has ended so if I have another problem it is off the bone yard for the Jeep. As it stands I will never purchase another. Bad experiences are hard to forget (including the dealers attitude to the issues).
Hear you loud and clear bjp. I've kept my current car too long beyond warranty - it was never my intention and I always planned to be rid of it at the 2.5 yr mark... But I waited for the MY16 which for us here in Aus seems not likely to materialise. Hindsight.....
I have dived in the deep end again and have another Jeep siting at a dealer waiting to be picked up, but my wife is on strict instruction to kick me in the unmentionables if I go past the 2.5yr period again.

A bunch of different things can trigger it but for me it was an EVAP error code. Has to do with fuel vapors escaping to the atmosphere. They reset it and did a software update. Came back on 5-7 days later. Went back to verify and sure enough. Different dealer did a reset for me and said that I should book it in for a "smoke test"? Back to the original dealer for that but they said the couldn't find a leak but did replace the sending unit that transmits the error code.
Came back on a week later. Booked an appt. Light went off. Few days later back on again then a day later it went off. Now it's been almost 2 weeks and no light.
I have a 2011 - 150kilos and engine light constantly on last two weeks and in addition - on hard acceleration power simply drops off once I hit around 3k rpm?
Oil changed regularly
New air filter
Car serviced regularly
I had CEL light on immediately after leaving dealers after 24,000km oil change/service. No other warning lights or messages. Oil pressure light did not come on.
My code scanner showed code that indicated oil pressure issue.
When I drove back to dealer prior to the fix I saw oil pressure on display was varying up when revs were going down.. this did not make any sense to me then I had engine go into limp mode and would not rev above 3000RPM. Was just after I pulled out into busy traffic
Dealer said they found and replaced faulty oil pressure sensor. (oil pressure was OK but the sensor feedbacks/controls the two/multi stage oil pump?
"uses a solenoid to drive the pump into low or high pressure mode. For example, below 3,500 rpm, the pump conserves energy by using low pressure; at speeds over 3,500 rpm, the pump switches to high pressure."
NB I was very suspect that the CEL light came on as soon as I got to normal road speed after leaving the dealers after the initial service. I'm no expert in reading the scanner codes but it 'looked' to me like there was an old code that had been reset in the log (by dealer at service time) and then same oil pressure code came on after I picked it up.
End story is 2 days after the sensor was replaced we took a 2 week 3000km road trip towing trailer and some beach 4WD'ing - all went brilliantly with no issues at all.
