Re: WK2 DownUnder

Extended warranties are expensive insurance against repairs. One wonders why you are buying such a car if you can't afford the repairs. Anyway, if you expected to need the extended warranty I suggest you look for a more reliable car.

That is a bit of a condescending reply , Bob. Thanks for the concern regarding my financial state and my anxiety levels.

I can certainly afford the car - I just don't like throwing money away. Given the cost of genuine parts, extended warranty may represent good value if required. I don't know how comprehensive the warranty is and the caveats, hence the question.

As for reliability issue, Jeep is an unknown quantity in this regard. Jeep hasn't had a great reputation with prior models and while most reviews indicate that Jeep has turned the corner with the new model, it is really too soon to tell in the medium to long term. A read of the 160 odd pages of this thread has revealed a small number of owners with problems already.

I don't expect to have to use extended warranty, but that does not mean I wouldn't be needing to use it at some point. I have always had comprehensive insurance on my cars but in over 30 years of driving I have never had an accident that was my fault and have probably made 2 claims in that time. There is no way the value of my claims equal my premiums. So while I have no expectation of making a claim I still maintain my insurance in case something happens. If the car was written off for some reason that would be a huge expense I could have mitigated by having appropriate insurance.

Extended warranty is the same. I can pay $2400 at time of purchase and spread it out over my car loan - $10 per week. Given that a OEM windscreen costs $2700 for example, I can only guess that any repair out of warranty could be horrendously expensive. There could be some recourse through the Australian Consumer Laws - but the legislation has not been tested enough to establish a body of case law regarding the obligations of motor vehicle manufacturers out of the statutory warranty period.

I agree with all your points Selous...
Have a look through the extended warranty posts in this section of this forum (Export Grand Cherokee, bit more than half way down the page).
My intention is to revisit the extended warranty position before the factory warranty expires. The Allianz new car extended warranty can be purchased at the time.

Re: WK2 DownUnder

I ordered mine on 29th September 2011. I was advised of its build date in late November, to be December with an ETA of Mid February. It arrived at the dealers on 1st Feb 2012.
It is a 3.0 litre CRD Overland with everything. Also bought the adventure pack which gave me protection plates for underneath and dropped me back to 18 inch wheels which was the main reason I got the adventure pack. I also added a tow pack.

As I've only done 800km in it so far its a bit early to say much other than I like it. I'm still getting used to all the buttons and gadgets and settings which can get a bit confusing considering I'm still waiting for my user manual.

I only have the option of the extended factory warranty at the time of sale. I'll drop round to the dealer and grab a copy of the warranty document to see if it is underwritten by a 3rd party. it has Chrysler jeep extended factory warranty emblazoned all over the cover, so one would think it is offered by chrysler

Swann are the official warranty insurers for Jeep. You must buy it at time of purchase, or if Jeep let Swann contact us directly, then we can buy it form them before the factory warranty expires. Personally I am with Selous, I prefer to have the piece of mind knowing I am covered.

I apologise for the tone of my post. It was not meant to be condescending to you in any way. It was aimed at the motor industry in the way they prey on the fears of the users. The point that I phrased so ineloquently was that these fears are in most cases unfounded. It is well known that manufacturers' margins on new cars is little or nothing (good for us) so they need to make their profits any way they can.

The issue of comprehensive insurance is quite another matter. Few of us can readily afford to replace a written off vehicle.

No worries Bob

They didn't even mention the extended warranty to me, I only found out about it on this forum. They did, however, try to flog paint protection, electronic rust protection and interior protection to me for just shy of $3k

I might have been born at night, but I wasn't born last night. Needless to say, they didn't make a cent off me on that crap.

As for margins, I suspect they are a little healthier than dealers and manufacturers would have us believe. I cannot see how a JGC costs double over here than the US, even allowing for future exchange contracts, RHD conversion, LCT etc unless there is a fat margin in there somewhere.

Are these available after market or through the dealer?

Looks like the only thing I'm missing is the 18" wheels and the bash plates.

oh, and the front tow hooks of course!

excerpt from an email from my dealer in relation to my enquiries........

"At this point in time, Jeep Australia do not offer a genuine factory warranty extension. The available option we can offer is to extend through Allianz and the costs are as follows.

1. 3 year or 60,000km = $3,119

2. 2 year or 50,000km = $2,867"

It was also strange that my dealer advised they didn't do the Swann package - my feeling it has to do with margins.
Just another example of the huge difference in customer focus between dealers.

Re: WK2 DownUnder

Not sure if anyone else has fitted there electric braking systems in this location so I thought I would post some photo's. Took a good couple of hours to do but I'm really happy with the result,

The little cover still comes down so when your not towing you can hide everything. On my WH I had the controller up near the windscreen but this time thougt I'd like to hide it better.

The red switch sitting beside it is so I can turn the break controller off while backing my boat down the boat ramp.

The relays drive the electric break controler and the other one feeds the power back to the trailer plug.

Have fitted the relays into a box with extra long leads so you can get it all out of the way when it comes time to replace the battery.

Info on how to rip your dash apart can be found on jeepgarage. And best of all no squeaks rattles or marks on the dash when it was all done
