Re: WK2 DownUnder

I have been following a thread titled "Grease In Both Front Wheels ...Normal?" http://www.jeepgarage.org/f73/grease...mal-73976.html

I'm summarising here, so the following is only my 'interpretation' of the threads contents thus far.

A US owner (PhillyAnt) discovered grease in both front wheels just days after taking delivery of his vehicle. The shortish story is, his vehicle (and numerous others) experienced 'a failure mode' of the outer band holding the CV boot on. This resulted in the centrifugal force throwing all the grease out from around the CV joint. Both front CV joints experienced the same failure mode. The root cause of these failures appears to be that a supplier to Jeep produced 'a bad batch' of half-axle assemblies. The outer band holding the CV boot was not 'tensioned/clamped' as it should have been.

All of the contributors to that thread, that experienced the failure, owned vehicles built (from what I can gather) between early March and around about the 14th April. Again, from what I can determine, no vehicles built in that period are yet in Australia.

I have quickly compiled the list below of (expectant) Australian JGC owners, whose vehicles were assembled in that 'bad patch period', in the hope that I help get the word out.

race4life - built 5 March,
Mark_38 - built 12 March,
Gcnewbie - built 19 March,
Gr8Ness - built 29 March,
rocksfly - built 31 March,
webby1970 - built 1 April,
Foglamp - built 3 April,
Redlder - built 10 April.

I don't want to be alarmist, but I for one will be looking very carefully at the CV boots of my vehicle at delivery. I firmly suggest the above mentioned owners (and anyone else expecting delivery of a vehicle assembled during that period) do the same.

Regards,
Gr8Ness.

Mine is a 2/14 build, so I check mine every week and have not had an issue.

Thanks Mate. I read that thread last night and immediately checked my build date. I will definitely keep an eye out for this and I have also marked it in the checklist by Benn0. I will take my laptop with me to look through the photos of before and after by PhillyAnt. Kinda makes me worry what else they screwed up on..

I think you should be OK. The bad batch seems to have entered the vehicle assembly line about the first week in March.

Lets hope not too many Aussie bound vehicles were built in that period. I can only imagine how long it would take Jeep Australia to get new half axles in country.

These same axles are used on Dodge Durango's in the US and owners of those vehicles are experiencing the same failures. I sense a supply issue .....

Right now there seems to be a hold on newly built vehicles in the US, for some remedial work on HVAC? and replacing axles, for those watchin Milous tracking..

Not sure if its because they've caught this problem or not, but my Jeeps been sitting in QA/QC yards for almost a month now

Your lucky mate mine has gone missing Milous has tracked it to port but not the port they ship from I.E. Curtis Bay. When I put the vin number into the shipping site it does not register.
The dealer has a 18/6 delivery date so we will wait and see!!!!!!!.

Cheers

WK2 DownUnder

It will be interesting to see if any of us with new vehicles due into Australia find an outer cv clamp issue. I added it to Rev 3 of the checklist with Rev 4 still in draft.
While my list is long, it provides a little confidence that any systemic issues are check prior to leaving the dealership with the new Jeep. I still have many weeks to wait. :-(

Why would you rethink your choice Mark?

The checklist contains things that would be relevant for any choice of vehicle - it's just that Jeep Garage owners have taken the time and created such a list and published it for you. Aside from the CV joint thing (which I agree is not a good thing but caught so to speak), you could probably transfer this list to any vehicle.

To give you some comfort we have just hit the 25000km mark on our early build '14 CRD JGC (that dreaded early build... - April the 5th 2013 to be exact - delivery in early July 2013. The Rego papers arrived today which made me think 'has it really been that long') and she remains faultless.

I know the lack of VR with regards to the Nav is an outstanding issue but I'm sure that will be addressed at some stage. That is the only outstanding on the vehicle that we took delivery of some 10 months ago.

Certainly after reading JG, and the issues that have been posted you would be forgiven for thinking 'what on earth am I buying?'

But take heart, it's the old story that the happy owners never post their happiness. You only read about the issues.

Well I'm posting my happiness - It's a damn good vehicle as I'm sure you will find out once you take delivery.

I started looking at the list, and just closed it, I didn't check half of that stuff I suspect. I did the usual walk around and internal look. After that, not much. It was well over a month before I popped the hood and made sure there was really an engine in there. I should have checked earlier, turns out Ben Mendelsohn was in there instead.

Re: WK2 DownUnder

You got Ben Mendelsohn? Jebus - Lucky you (Actually no - you can keep him).

Did you check for air though? In the tyres that is, not through the vents. Bet you didn't.
