Re: WK2 DownUnder

Well 250kms on mine..... and I'm happy!!

Mine is a Feb 2014 build (D1 17th Jan), and I just checked my CV boots again, no movement and no grease.

I don't want to be alarmist, but I for one will be looking very carefully at the CV boots of my vehicle at delivery. I firmly suggest the above mentioned owners (and anyone else expecting delivery of a vehicle assembled during that period) do the same.

Regards,
Gr8Ness.

Thanks Gr8Ness. I am in this dreaded list too!! I will definetely put this on my list of things to check on delivery.

I don't mind if this issue pops up after delivery. My only concern is the wait time for the dealer to replace the axles. If Jeep Aus have to get them from US, we will be without our new Jeeps for sometime and that sucks.

Issues do come up, it is just great that the forum flags a lot of things for us before most others know there is an issue

I wont mind a further wait to get things fixed IF they give me something equivalent to drive around in while it is getting fixed.
I wont be happy forking out the money I have and then being off the road or in some small piece of crap as some members have already dealt with.

GCnewbie, Mark_38,

An owner in the US who has failed CV boots was told by his Service Manager that a search showed only 5 axle assemblies in stock in mainland US. That was last week. With 6-7 weeks of GC production (and a similar amount of Dodge Durango production) affected by this issue, I think there will be a looooonnnng wait for many. Unless JA has plenty in country.... nah. It (axle assembly) is not a part you would normally expect to fail. I would not expect any Manufacturer to stock such a part.

It is for this reason (some would say assumption) that I will not take delivery of the vehicle unless the axles are changed out. By all means they can give me a loaner GC Overland until then....

Gr8ness/ Rocksfly/ GCNewbie,

Do you think it would make it easier for us to actually lodge a complaint at

Consumer

Not sure if the ACCC would get involved but if enough of us did the same with reference to the forum and photos we might get them to initiate a discussion with Jeep Australia . I am just about to put the details of my Jeep and register a complaint assuming that this is going to fail.

Cheers.

race4life,

Thanks for the link.

Having had a quick read, I think this may be a good option for 'raising the flag.'

However, I am not sure we can do this as yet, for the following reasons:

1. We don't actually have a failure to report yet, (although the chances are right up there with death and taxes).

2. We have not met the criteria of first raising the complaint with the dealer and/or manufacturer, (which we also can't do as we don't yet have a car or a failure)

3. I am assuming that the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development will categorise any complaint we raise with respect to the CV Boots as either:
  • lack of confidence or trust in a vehicle;
  • warranty issues;
I think we may have to go down the path that Bungadore did with the Navigation routing issue. That being the State & territory consumer protection agency applicable for our state.

Personally, while I have the 'luxury' of the option to not complete the sale (ie hand over money and take delivery), I think that this may be my best leverage/bargaining chip. I repeat, I just won't take delivery and the problem goes away. (Although I will have a new problem of selecting a different vehicle .....)

Race4life

I have just spoken with my Dealer he was not aware of the CV boot axle issue. I bought him up to speed and advised of forum links and the extent of the problem....... The extent of the looming problem here in OZ considering a lack of parts and poor supply management.

I advised I could not drive a defective vehicle off his site knowing that the thing will fail and I would then be without a vehicle possibly for months..... Further if the procurement of parts is so tight as to only replace the existing failure then a second period off the road would be inevitable when the second boot failed.

He is reviewing the Specific threads I gave him to puruse and is contacting JA in an effort to try and gauge the extent of the problem.

I further advised him of the situation state side and how vehicles have been held up on delivery whilst being access for being afflicted with this issue. Mentioned to him how one poster claimed dealer stated only 5 axles in inventory in entire USA.

He realises there is a PerfectStorm headed this way if indeed all axles from the said production run are faulty.

Until I hear back from him I am undecided as to how I will proceed.

Cheers

I told my dealer the same, although my D1 date is of 21 Feb so I might actually go look at the MFD date on the vehicle and then decide to walk out depending on whether it definitely falls during the window of manufacture.

The sales manager at the dealer told me that its definitely not legal to drive with CV Boot / Axle issues as its not road worthy. I am going to be armed with all the photos of this failing and an offline copy of the forum thread .

I am surprised that Jeep US have not notified JA of this issue considering it affects the road worthiness and safety of people in the car and around the car. I am also about to call JA and speak to the customer service people. I agree with Gr8ness in thinking it might be time to knock on the door of the State and Territory Consumer Protection .

Wow this is so much more painful than what I had envisioned ..

Will agree with Gr8ness, at this point in time my car apparently landed in Port this morning so I have not even seen the car.

Unfortunately from things discussed here it sound like there is a high possibility that my car will have a problem but there is also a glimmer of hope that it wont.

The amount of GC that are coming off the production line differs from the amount of failures?
So to me it seems like only part of the batch is faulty and it is just the luck of the draw whether we receive good or bad - Only an inspection and time will really tell

Re: WK2 DownUnder

I can imagine this new issue is stressful for those about to take delivery, but I wouldn't assume your cars have the problem. Have a look at it, perhaps ask that they get the service guys to inspect it on a hoist. If it looks ok it is difficult to say it is unroadworthy. Ideally it would be good to get some guidance from Jeep as to which cars are affected, and how to spot the problem before it breaks.

I understand the worst part would be paying for it, then having it sitting in a service center waiting 2-3 months for an axle. Might just want something in writing that says they will give you a GC as a loaner if that happens.....

Anyway, good luck, hope you all avoid this one.

Yep I will definitely be doing that just before I ask the financier to release the funds and before I sign to get the delivery of the vehicle.

Thanks Ben.

Do you know what is the Jeep Australia/Dealer standard practice with loaner cars when the vehicle is deemed not road worthy and there is an extended wait on the parts?

Anyone else on this forum who might have come across this scenario before, please jump in. I want to know if there is a precedence set before I start engaging with dealer on this matter.

Thank You
J
