Yeah I know what you mean. Im in the market for a new ute, currently have a 2012 hilux and the donk is primitive when compared to any euro diesel. Having trouble finding something I like. Might hold out for the new hilux, but currently its a toss up between the ranger and amarock, but not really keen on either.

What was she driving? Looks like she hit you quite high.

Re: WK2 DownUnder

A mid 90's Corolla. It didn't appear to have a 3" lift... there were no skid marks... so I'm pretty sure there was no braking involved.

So the damage is probably for a 60km/h direct impact. The Cheap did OK I reckon.

Re: WK2 DownUnder

I've got to admit I've forgiven the Cheap for some of its shortcomings too. If I was driving my old Prado I reckon I'd be picking bitumen out of the right side of my head.

I've not driven any of the new utes, but the Colorado, D-Max, Amarok and Ranger all look pretty cool, and seem to have reasonable spec. You'll never do your dough on a 'Lux though...

It's kind of fast/slow/fast/slow as the arms of the universal pass through the angle. The bigger the angle the bigger the problem. This caused havoc on old fourbies that had universals on the front wheels. It ruined tyres if driven too long in 4WD on bitumen. With transmission shafts, there is a universal at either end so one cancels the other out. A CV joint eliminates this fast/slow thing. The output shaft always rotates at the same speed as the input shaft regardless of the angle therefore "Constant Velocity". I've had to re-pack the CVs on my old VeeDub. They are pretty fancy pieces of gear. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constant-velocity_joint

Apparently it means: Constant Vulnerability.

Remember, speed and velocity are two different things.
I remember the old riddle How is it possible to be constantly accelerating yet maintain the same speed?

Re: WK2 DownUnder

Constant velocity joints allow each degree that is rotated on the input shaft to be exactly repeated on the output shaft. Universal joints that were popular before CV joints were introduced suffered from variable velocity, the output shaft didn't mirror the rotation of the input shaft due to the changes in angle. The greater the angle of the joint the more shudder you would get in the rotation of the shaft. A quarter turn on input could result more or less than a quarter turn on output, ie. variable. CV joints don't have this problem, and are the reason front wheel drive cars are so popular today.

edit: oh, what BobT said.

Re: WK2 DownUnder

If the shaft at the big end matches the opposing shaft at the small end, then the ends of the shafts, if rotating in a continuous uni-directional cycle will always match the shaft if the small end was opposed to a larger ended shaft being connected by consistent forces.
