The more I read about it, the less clear it seems.
I don't want to do this mod, if it will give my insurer the chance to walk away from their responsibilities in the case that I have an accident claim...

You need to check carefully what your states rules are around modifying a vehicle with electronic stability controle

Hi thanks, I'm in WA. I understood that 50mm or less was OK. Until I read about VSB14, which seems to indicate that I would need certification of the non-effect on ESC from the manufacturer of the lift kit.

Re: WK2 DownUnder

I think this issue has been put in the too hard basket, plenty of car owners (with ESC) get lifts, and increase the height of their car with larger tyres, I haven't heard of any of them being booked by the cops or denied an insurance claim. The wording of the VSB is a little wishy washy too:

For modification codes contained in this Section of VSB 14, evidence should be obtained either
from the vehicle manufacturer or through testing to determine the impact on the ESC system.
To remain within the scope of this Section of VSB 14, a vehicle fitted with ESC must not be
modified if the operation of the ESC is affected unless the ESC system is adjusted accordingly.
Persons wishing to modify vehicles equipped with ESC must contact their Registration
Authority
for further information and guidance.

That last bit sounds to me like they are saying ask your state authority, this is just a suggestion. Have suppliers tested their lift kits? I'm sure they have, to what extent is testing required? Who knows?

I'd ring your local registration office, and inform your insurer, that should be enough, but interpretation of this rule could go any way.

Re: WK2 DownUnder

Otherwise, turn off ESC... then the suspension lift can't affect it

Just suggesting a 50mm lift is going to prevent ESC from detecting a tank slapper or similar is ridiculous. If anything, the system would most probably take action earlier due to increased output from yaw sensors.

Ask your insurer. What they say will have the greatest effect on your decision making IMO.
