Steve, your advice here was spot on. I've just been quoted four months wait for the replacement. Time to call some dealers.

Something you need to check. Look up the load limit of your front axles then add half the weight of the bull-bar plus winch plus bash plate. My guess is you will be over. No need to panic. Just be careful with the front end.
does anybody max axle loads. they are not in the vehicle handbook. i guess that means there cant be a limit other than gross vehicle weight. i weighed the gc and caravan so i am interested to know

My MY12 manual lists the Gross Axle Weight Rating as:
Front: 1,452kg
Rear: 1,678kg
That's to be taken as both front wheels together and both rear wheels together as it would readout on a weighbridge. You can confirm this by noting the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating which is roughly the sum of the two. In my manual this is shown in a table under "Trailer Towing" in the "Starting and Operating" section.

thanks. it's the same in my MY14 handbook as well, just didn't find it there.
when empty, with the bull bar, winch and synthetic rope, the front axle was 1390kg and rear 1110kg.
with caravan, ball weight 240kg weight distributing hitch and caravan 2720kg, the front axle was 1380kg and rear was 1350kg.
that leaves 219kg of load capacity for the jeep.
Peter

Re: WK2 DownUnder

Interesting information, but something doesn't stack up.

1452 - 1380 = 72kg Front
1678 - 1350 = 328kg Rear

There's some data missing. What occupant weight did you allow, or is the amount not detailed the fuel load, etc?

Cheers,
Steve

gross vehicle mass is 2948 kg. ie less than the sum of the two axle maxima.
fortuanely we dont have much in the car when we are rowing the caravan.

Re: WK2 DownUnder

Thanks for clarifying Peter. It's an exercise I have to do myself, but I'm still moving weight around in the van for best possible balance. At the moment there's a bit more at the ends than I want.

Cheers,
Steve

Re: WK2 DownUnder

I cant believe the amount of jeeps I now see towing vans around, im sure they are now out numbering the nissans and toyotas. My travelling family members are noticing this also and always commenting btw they dont own jeeps.

"...rowing the caravan." Obviously a typo but if you were on the east coast right now, it would be quite appropriate.

Yes the figures don't add up. My guess is that the axle load relates directly to the strength of the axle whereas the GVM relates more to overall vehicle stability.

Re: WK2 DownUnder

Yeah I'll readily admit I wasn't thinking. Combined maximum axle loads often exceed the GVM.

Thanks for dredging out all the weights for me guys. One less job to do!

Cheers,
Steve
