That sounds a bit like traction control (I.e. Esp killing power on excessive wheel spin). Was it in Sand or Auto mode? I think that in sand mode the ESP is disabled but not in auto.

I agree it's the ESP but for different reasons. The system can kill power but that applies only to the engine as a whole and doesn't make a noise. As I hinted at before, with one front wheel in the air, traction is lost to both wheels. This is because the front has an open diff. A diff simply assures that both wheels get the same torque so if one has no torque (spinning) both have no torque. This happens in the rear as well but not so much for those with ELSD's. Once the ESP detects a spinning wheel, it applies brake pressure to that wheel. This allows torque to flow to the other wheel and hopefully the vehicle moves forward. Once forward motion is detected, brake pressure on the previously spinning wheel is released allowing it to gain traction as well. The rattling noise comes from the ESP unit. However, I don't know enough about the design of the Jeep's ESP unit to know if the noise is the action of the pressure pump building up pressure or the ESP solenoid valve releasing pressure as happens in an emergency stop or both.

Re: WK2 DownUnder

I agree Bob. I'm not referring to the cracking noise here, just the loss of power. As far as I can tell, the BLD (brake locking diff) function is separate to the ESP functions.

I had an occasion in my old jeep commander where I got bogged in really soft sand due to the ESP still being active (you had to manually disable it). I cruised into the really soft sand and as the vehicle slowed rapidly I hit the gas, but the ESP prevented the power getting to the wheels and it just stopped.

I'm thinking that somehow the ESP was related to the power loss Boxhead referred to, but that should only be possible in auto mode (not sand or mud). Not sure if it's disabled in 4lo auto?

Re: WK2 DownUnder

Having a read of the manual. When in 4wd low the TCS function of the ESC (except for the limited slip feature) is disabled. The engine power reduction feature of the TCS is also disabled when in 4wd low. (Page 230)

Re: WK2 DownUnder

Do you have the 8 speed box? Thinking about how you mentioned it upshifting also, maybe a "feature" of the transmission programming?

Re: WK2 DownUnder

Yeah have the 8 speed. Think someone else was complaining as well about if you manually select a gear it will change up after a certain rpm.
Whilst that is a pain i am still at a loss for explaing the stalling.

Yep, manual is only manual up to the point of perceived abuse. That's where the abuse control Nanny steps in and says no no no. I had a Commodore SV6. Even in "manual" it would let you do one burnout but a second was impossible, not that that was an issue for me.

I reckon they would factor it into the initial purchase price.
