.....and what we don't understand down here is an Overland in the States is circa US$50k on road, here we're paying circa A$75k. For most of this year the A$ has traded above the US$ (US$1.00 = A$1.05). When the A$ floated in 1983 the value against the US$ plummeted to A$0.60 - A$0.75.

Today, Aussie Jeep are still using past A$ values to price their products . Granted, the Govt fees are excessive (GST, Luxury Car Tax, On Roads etc) however, if one looks at the forex rate and with the exception of freight (+/- $1200 roll on/roll off) we should be paying less for Jeeps down here or at worse we should be on par plus a nominal extra for freight.

Remember also, we have an FTA with the US so we pay no duty, seems like Jeep are not only providing us the ride but also taking us for one also!

Seem like we're being treated like mugs down here. Here's an interesting read
http://blog.privatefleet.com.au/home/rip-off/

We are being ripped off across the full range of imported cars. Let's hope apathy does not win the day.

Don't bother, you'd need to have a seat at OPEC for this to be economical.

Aside from that it's very messy physically and administratively, it's considered as DG (dangerous goods) and shipping lines / freight forwarders clip the ticket along the way.

You're better off finding a local wholesaler if you can or have a good mate at a local distributor offering mates rates!

Many years ago we were importing olive oil for the Greek community. Families would order 25lt cans of olive oil from Greece as the Australian local market was virtually non existent. We'd go off to Darling Harbour (when it was a real port) and pick up pallet loads of the stuff. Sure as eggs, of the 20-30 cans on the pallet at least 2 would be leaking!

Now imagine if you paid all that money to import a 30 gal drum of oil, went to pick it up and found nothing in it. It makes the local suppliers look very attractive!

Re: WK2 DownUnder

I've had a look and found plenty of dodgy aftermarket shark fins in taiwan... can anyone suggest suitable sharkfin for the GC?

Any reason you want a 5w-20 ?
THIS is the one I was planning to run in my CRD, as I have always found Nulon to be cost effective and a great oil. This is what I have always used in all my cars and never had an issue. Although it is a 5w-30, it meets all the requirements Jeep want in an oil.

Re: WK2 DownUnder

Never tried Nulon. Might look into that some time, however I'm of the view that you need to run the oil for 2 consecutive intervals to really appreciate the oil.

Ive used Penrite for the last few years and have been very happy with it, and reasonable value as well.

Penrite Enviro Plus 5W-30 seems to meet the specs for the CRD as well (will likely be what I will use) so there is a few different options out there.

Why do you want to use 5W20 as that what is specified for the Hemi? The CRD is specified 5W30.

Nice

Was considering the Hemi myself, or rather my wife was. The car is for her and she is bit of lead foot when driving by herself.

I've had her pulling up to the front gate (we live semi rural) and all 4 discs have been smoking.

However, the CRD is no slouch either and that is the way we have gone. Would have liked the Hemi though, if nothing just for the sound of it.
