Hey guys, does anyone know what sort of force it should take for the airbag to deploy? My wife rear ended someone and spent the night in hospital because she banged her head into the steering wheel. She didn't break anything, just ended up with a bruised eyeball and a bunch of cuts. This was in a 2013 build MY2014 GC Limited.

I'd say it needs to be fairly forceful. I was involved in a 7 car pile up in my my2013.
Hit from front and rear quite hard and no airbags were deployed.

Hope your mrs is ok.

That's good to hear.

My wife had to go to hospital aswell. She was suffering from back and neck pain so had ambo take her there.
Turned out to be just bad whiplash.

Car was written off - twisted chassis

When hit at 60km/h I had the side airbags deploy on the impact side of the car, as well as my belt tensioner. As it was an "unbraked" collision and much of the impact was on the front wheel, the shock transfer would have been quite sharp. This is what the sensors are geared towards. When crumple zones are still at work the airbags often don't fire.

Bear in mind an airbag might look like a comfy cushion, but it's quite possible to sustain injury from them... especially if you wear glasses.

Fred I hope your wife has a speedy and complete recovery. Out of interest, is your wife short and does she tend to sit a little more forward?

Cheers,
Steve

Yeah, I figured you could be injured by them. I've heard of broken noses. The manual mentions "rope burn" style skin abrasions.

My wife is actually fairly tall, about 5'10". I'm not entirely sure of her seating position, but I'm the normal driver (6') and she just leaves the seat in the same position, so if anything I'd say she sits back a bit.

Car wise, I'm hoping for a write off, but the assessor reckons about $10k damage so far. The front doors don't open properly though and they don't know why yet, so it's up in the air at the moment.

It may sound a bit weird, but if you have a crash and have not sustained critical injuries, then you didn't want the airbags going off. That is an explosion in your face, legs etc... and if they don't damage you, then it is still one expensive bang.

I had a moment of dyslexia Fred, and saw $13k. I was worried about which amphetamine powered panel shop would be taking the job! At $31k, I think you'll find that the car will be written off unless it is particularly high spec. I can't see what you've got / had other than that it's a diesel.

Do you have "new for old" provisions in your insurance policy? Now is the (second) time to become very familiar with your PDS.

Best of luck,
Steve

It's a Limited CRD with lux group II so fairly run of the mill.

I definitely have new for old, but reading the PDS this time around is the first time it's twigged that if I opt for a payout rather than replacement, it's based on market value rather than the new value. I guess that makes the decision easy, but I thought it would have made sense for them to offer their buy price as a payout, regardless of the market value. Maybe they would negotiate on that when the time comes if I decide to go down that road.

For them the purchase price is a tax deduction so they effectively buy a new car for 30% less.

Maybe, maybe not, the payout is also a tax deduction for the insurer. It's all swings and roundabouts depending on cash-flow, fiscal timing and price negotiations. Decide on what you prefer, put up the best argument you can and see if they bite. If they don't, you might entice them by offering something you don't care too much about. For example you might accept an easier to get colour or lesser accessories. Remember that despite what anyone might say, there is no such thing as not negotiable.

Find an identical car to what you had and advise the insurers of the whereabouts. Tell them to match it through their network or buy it. Be warned of accepting supply of any vehicle you can not confirm as "on the ground". My insurer found a better deal than the car I advised them of... but it was six weeks away. The dealer then tried the ol' switcheroony for a car nearer to delivery. After a decent rant or two, they bought the car I had found.

Do not open the gate to variation unless you want to.

Cheers,
Steve

Doesn't "new for old" mean a 2013 Limited gets replaced by a 2015 Limited with same options?

Be careful they dont find a 2014 thats been sitting in a yard - I would at least argue that a 2014 is not new. But that might be a rather picky argument.
Guess if a 2013 is replaced by a 2014 you are at least in same if not better position that before the incident so you cant really object.
Negotiate with the insurance company if you want to upgrade to a higher spec model. They should be buying at a good price ( possibly from CJA direct ) and the upgrade should not be at full retail difference.

My post was a bit confusing.. pre suspension at 100kph was 20 and post-suspension raise at 100kph was 17. My theory is that the air route under the Jeep and caravan is straighter-the caravan has high clearance. also less of The caravan front is exposed to the airstream because the car roof is higher. The extra weight would make virtually no difference at steady speed on a level road.
As far as I could tell all the other variables were the same.

Read the manual you are suppose to tow in Sport mode. Also I believe your fuel consumption figures are all based on towing 2.8 ton van... You stated 16/17 and after lift 17.????
What am I missing?

Ok so your full cut replacement bull bar weighs in at 130kgs approx if it's the steel three hoop version. So less aerodynamics and more weight but still doing roughly the same mileage, whilst towing the van.?

Oldtimers must be setting in.... Coulda swore I read that towing should be done in sports mode.
With max payload, towing camper trailer fully loaded sports mode seemed logical and less labouring for the engine from what I could determine.
Cheers

I've swapped back and forth and can hardly pick the difference with 2.5T behind. It's certainly obvious without the load on, but with the added drag of the trailer doesn't seem to be so noticeable. I find it's more apparent when decelerating to be honest.

Cheers,
Steve

I found this in one of the many versions of the manual but have not confirmed that it is valid for our vehicles:

Normally, in Paddle Shift Mode, the transmission will automatically shift up when maximum engine speed is reached. If, however, Paddle Shift Mode is engaged while in SPORT mode, the transmission will remain in the selected gear even when maximum engine speed is reached. The transmission will upshift only when commanded by the driver.
