Re: WK2 Offroad

Did some more sand work recently (Blacksmiths beach) and I got really stuck, took a few snatches to get out however when I got it out finally, found the front dropped to park height, back was still at OR1. Anyone seen this before? Buttons wouldn't respond to input, restarted the car and it was ok again...

Re: WK2 Offroad

Btw, I was stuck due to driver error, the Jeep is much better off-road than I am.

was your car was bellied up? if so that might of caused it.
My car was on a hoist once and when the hoist was lowered my suspension was up one end and down the front end. it sorted it self out once I turned it off and on again.

How'd you get stuck there?

I was thinking of hitting blacksmiths but keep hearing its proper soft.

I have not had this happen, but now that you've told us of your experience I can see how that does happen, and I'm now thinking Yeah of course that's what would (could) happen. Thanks for sharing your experience and now we are aware.

The nearest dunes to me are far away, Pismo Beach, about 240 miles. I want to go practice there, to learn how to drive in sand. There are several YouTube video lessons about it.

Re: WK2 Offroad

The sand at Blacksmiths beach is softer than at Stockton. I didnt let my tyres down as much as I normally do (had them at 18psi but should probably have been at 12psi with my tyres). I also was still able to move backwards and forwards but only succeded in making 2 long trenches until i eventually bellied out and stopped moving.
I didnt have my maxtrax with me either, they are just magical when i remember to pack them.

Re: WK2 Offroad

Yep - I can confirm Blacksmiths is soft. The beach is narrow (probably non existent now after the storms). There is a track on the dunes at the rear of the beach but it's a steep climb from the beach up to the track. One word - momentum!

Re: WK2 Offroad

I found If driving a jeep in soft sand and you stop and get out for whatever reason, the trick is you have to remember to reselect sand mode, if not and you restart off in auto forgetting it will bury itself.

Oh that's not good. That's likely true for all modes, then? 4-Hi and 4-Lo? Thanks for the heads up, I'll have to be mindful for if that's how it works.

It's incredibly annoying. It does the same from "mud", and worse, with QL, it returns the ride height to normal from OR1 (which is automatically selected when "mud" is selected). It does this EVEN if you had OR1 selected before you selected "mud". I'm pretty sure it holds low range however.
This factor, along with the speed limit on OR1, makes one yearn for less automation.
I once had 4wd and low range disabled because of a dirty wheel speed sensor - not fun when I was 300km up a 4wd track.
Thanks,
Russell

Re: WK2 Offroad

Blacksmiths yesterday, went onto the beach with 18psi in the Cooper ST MAXX - very quickly was going absolutely no where, i've been on soft sand before but this was pretty impressive, before I ended up bogged as soon as I slowed down or tried to turn I stopped and dropped tyre pressures down to about 13 PSI, I could have gone lower.

This was much nicer, the tracks I was leaving were much shallower than a few of the others around me and I was able to drive up the steep tracks / dunes and onto / off the beach front without any real concern.

Got stuck once on purpose and used the max trax / tred devices, they work really well.
