Yep, thats the device that applies the brakes I believe. You may notice it on the road sometimes also. I think when it pre primes the brakes.

I drive on 4Low most of the time when on sand, maybe it's not necessary but I feel more confident with 4Low.. Any thing bad could happen to the engine because of running on 4Low for couple hours?

Yes, sand is about momentum, IME.

About the OP's question on steep downhill engine braking, I don't think that was answered. But I'm sure it has been discussed in other threads. I've experienced it also and I think it is normal if the downhill is steep enough. It's the same for a manual trans too - if you don't brake or upshift, the engine will over-rev.

There is nothing wrong with using low range on sand. Infact low will help alot of the time especially if the wheels start to dig in. The added resistance from the sand makes low a great choice. Momentum is not speed but the ability to keep drive forward.
Many a time I have had to use low on sand. Been driving in Fraser island sand, every year for over 15yrs.

I tend not to use low range on soft sand because in the past I have found the extra torque tends to break traction easier and spin a wheel. But it might be different in the Jeep with the electronic trickery.

Low range climbing dunes in a jeep is as useless as tits on a bull. However driving close to the waterline or flat areas it wont hurt, but really not needed.
