Re: WK2 Offroad

The times I have used low range on fraser island is climbing the hill up to kingfisher resort. There is plenty of grip there, but its a little steep, so lo gives a bit better control, rather than having to rev it to get the thing up. But that was the cruiser, the Jeep would probably eat it up in High.

Yeah, i do that in a hilux with 5 adults bottoming out everywhere. As you said, low range gives you more control. It has also helped get going again when bogged in the soft stuff. If you get it before you dig in too far, i put the old hilux in 4low and drop the clutch, digs itself out 95% of the time. When you try in 4 high, i dont have enough grunt to keep it going. Jeep shouldn't have that problem. Ground clearance is what you really want.

WK2 Offroad

Just back from 2 weeks up the coast including a couple of day trips to Lighthouse Beach and Sandbar. Not as tough as Fraser I know but GC in sand mode all the way and does the sand easy. No low range required - just point and shoot.ImageUploadedByJeepGarage1422223905.999954.jpg

Re: WK2 Offroad

My petrol Laredo had been similarly unstoppable in sand, until we met with a WA south coastal beach recently. That was some really coarse loose sand. Lesson learntImageUploadedByJeepGarage1422240895.313865.jpg.

Re: WK2 Offroad

The biggesr mistake is stopping the car in soft sand. Turning the ignition off for photos or whatever else you stopped for. Getting back in and starting to move off before selecting sand mode. As the car starts off in auto it burries itself before you know it.

Re: WK2 Offroad

Spent most of Saturday at Stockton. Didn't get stuck once and I stayed in high range all day, this time the Jeep was unstoppable. It appeared to now have the right gears selected all the time.

The issue with 4 low on the JGC is the 40kmh speed limiter.

Re: WK2 Offroad

Spent the week at Fraser Island last week.
As most have been saying high range is all that's needed 99% of time. However, there are some instances where low range is necessary. Some of the really soft and deep sand tracks (like ngkala rocks bypass) was a good example. To stay in high range is not an option, as to keep enough rev's up you would need to maintain too much speed. The jeep feels really unstoppable in low range.
A couple of more tranquil pic's attached...
