Re: WK2 Offroad

ok, at 40 seconds int he video it looks like the drivers front is hard up against something and all 3 other wheels are turning, so the center lock was working there. Perhaps rock mode reduces the TC response. I wonder if 4LO and auto would have been different.....

Here's what the manual says about rock:

Off-road calibration only available in 4WD
Low range. The vehicle is raised (if equipped with Air
Suspension) for improved ground clearance. Traction
based tuning with improved steer-ability for use on
high traction off-road surfaces. Activate the Hill Descent
Control for steep downhill control. Use for low
speed obstacles such as large rocks, deep ruts, etc

So it seems to assume good traction, whereas Mud assumes low traction, which is probably closer to the situation there.

Off road calibration for use on low traction
surfaces such as mud. Driveline is maximized for
traction. Some binding may be felt on less forgiving
surfaces. The electronic brake controls are set to limit
traction control management of throttle and wheel
spin.

Re: WK2 Offroad

Ok might experiment when I go out again next week.
I did notice on anther part of the track where there was a steep rutted undulating climb. I first tried it in rock mode, but only got half way up. then tried it in mud mode and the car climb all the up, I noticed the dash traction control light kept flash on during the climb. so maybe mud mode is the best mode for the traction control.

Re: WK2 Offroad

Yeah, looks like that might be the case, I'd also give auto a go. I'm offroading this weekend, my first chance to test it on some more difficult tracks without the missus freaking out in the passenger seat!

Again, really impressive that the WK2 made it through that. Looks like your rock rails got some loving too.

Re: WK2 Offroad

Regarding the TCS the manual says that the if the traction control detects wheel spin it would apply brake pressure to the spinning wheel thus allowing the other wheel to gain torque. It calls it brake lock differential.

So clearly in my video this didn't seem to happen.
The dealer said they checked if there were any fault codes, they found everything was normal.

mmm I'm going to have to experiment this weekend.
I'll try just mud mode and auto and see what happens.....

Re: WK2 Offroad

Seen a fair few systems work great over a short run of difficult stuff, then sort of lame out after a bit of continuous use. I've always suspected is the hydraulic pump going into protection due to temperature rise.

It's something to monitor in your experiments anyway.

Cheers,
Steve
