Had a great weekend in the Jeep last weekend. Spent Saturday on Stockton Beach and then Sunday drove up to Coxs river.

Few questions though im wondering if others have experienced?

With the Jeep in sand mode, going up some dunes it appeared once below a certain speed (like 10kmh ish) the traction control would intervene and really start to kill the power (even stalled the car once). Even happened in low range sand mode. I got around the issue by just driving faster and staying in high range for momentum, but just wondering if I can force traction control off completely?

On Sunday going down some steep sections, in low range using manual mode to engine brake, the car would upshift out of 3rd gear all the time, it would stay in 2nd and 4th but not 3rd. It would shift at about 2500rpm, anyone else experienced this?

Im going to take it in to dealer to check out but im waiting on some unrelated parts.

BTW, the car performs great most of the time, and the strange behavior i had could be easily worked around.

Re TC intervening at slow speed, are you keeping your foot on the accelerator when it happens? Or are you backing off?

Foot on the accelerator, all the way down.

A few times i turned off car and it reset to auto, then the traction control would be very intrusive. But set back to Sand and it would be ok.

Only time i experienced it was as the vehicle would be in very soft sand going up hill and rapidly losing momentum (ie when i need the power), a normal 4wd would just keep burying itself but the Jeep traction control would cut in and stall/stop the car.

Video still won't work.

I've driven a fair bit on beaches including Stockton, and a couple of training days up and down some big dunes and low range has never been necessary. Low range in my book is for low speed crawling - sand driving is momentum and revs. Best technique I've found is that when the car feels to be bogging down just keep your foot on even position and the traction control sorts itself out and feeds more power as it sees fit. I've never felt like I was going to get stuck. It's a different technique to my old challenger where you needed to back off the power if it felt like it was going to wheel spin and dig in. The GC took some getting used to but I trust the tech now!

I was there the week prior, the dunes arent as steep and high as 2yrs prior I was very disappointed. Lots of areas now fenced off. My overland performed effortlessly only time I would get stuck was forgetting to put it in sand mode. If I jumped in forgetting and it was left in auto it would bury itself but once sand was selected it crawled out. Never used the downhill descent as it was never needed. I did find the traction control doing odd sh it though but keep it floored and it sorted itself out.

I was with nikjak on this one. Had a great time there.
On your matter, my car had a service and software update the week before I went here and all performed well. No issues with Sand mode apart from forgetting to turn it back on whenever I turned the car off!

Nice pics! We were out at Whitehill beach near Mandurah last weekend for the day. I only have good things to say about this car on sand, am very impressed. I just have the v6 laredo. It's handling sections that my previous 4x4's would have bogged into, with ease, and as was already mentioned in this thread, there isn't a need for low range, paddle shifting nor a heavy foot, the sand mode just works a treat! Driving in auto mode on sand, getting going then flicking it into sand mode, there is an appreciable difference in traction.

Just picked up the Mopar underbody kit tonight, so will have some more fun with this car after fitting these bad boys.. :)

Agree with the comments. It's a different driving style, you need momentum but you don't need to crash through sections like an old school 4wd, you maintain a steady foot and let the jeep swim through the sand.

Just got seriously bogged today on Blue Holes beach near Walpole. During the process I found that exactly 0 wheels would turn when I had it in reverse in high-range sand mode. In low-range, the expected 2 wheels spun. Didn't seem right at all, was revving it and got nothing... Ended up being a fun day of digging sand instead of fishing haha. Eventually got out using mud mode, 4 reco tracks and a few helpers..

Cheers, Simon

Yeah, I think in sand mode TC does still get engaged, it just does it less aggressively. If you flick through the EVIC screens to the all terrain screen I think it gives you some details.

I'm guessing you have quadra trac, not quadra drive? The thing here is you want to get the wheels spinning so that the brakes will grab it and send power to the others.

edit: does anyone else notice that little ratcheting noise just after TC has kicked in? I've had it on slippery bitumen, and soft sand, a little clicking noise for a few seconds after the wheels spin.... coming from the front.

I drive on 4Low most of the time when on sand, maybe it's not necessary but I feel more confident with 4Low.. Any thing bad could happen to the engine because of running on 4Low for couple hours?
