Re: WK2 Snorkel

Hopefully someone on this site will know how to hook up my spotlights to the hi beam switch or be able to recommend an auto electrician in Melbourne who can do this, spoke to one today who wanted nothing to do with can bus systems even though they quoted can bus expertise on their website!! suggestions please as i would prefer they went out when low beam selected. Thanks

Re: WK2 Snorkel

Most auto elecricians should be able to help.
I would call up a 4x4 place who can recommend one, as most modern cars run CANBus now.

Re: WK2 Snorkel

In the old days, before CanBus, I would use the wire from the back of the highbeam plug to run the trigger for a relay, which in turn is driving the new Lamps. You would then run the main power to the relay via a seperate switch on the dash. That way, with the switch OFF, only High Beam would come on. With the switch ON, both High Beam and Driving lights would activate. The wire from the high beam only acted as a switch for the relay, so was not drawing big current. I guess it would depend how the CanBus is interpreting the draw of current to the lights, and whether it detecting a foreign object, would cause it to have fits.
I am to understand that CanBus is monitoring the lights for auto lights as well as detecting blown bulbs. This is also why you cannot add LED's as CanBus would detect a different load.
Hope I have been of some help. If you have friends with a VW, or even visit the VW forums, they might be able to assist, as VW's have had CanBus for years. Anyway, a good young autoelectrician should be able to resolve. An oldie may not be upto speed.

Thanks for that allypally, lucky for me my cousin is an auto lecky. Gone are the days of just tapping into the high beam wire then.

Re: WK2 Snorkel

Thanks, I am sure there must be plenty of others who have had this sorted by a good auto electrician and based on the advice provided it shouldn't be too hard.

Re: WK2 Snorkel

Have to do some research.
I did stumble some months ago on a module that gave high low and indicator output from the can-bus. think it was PAC.

Re: WK2 Snorkel

There is a similar product in the US that will be programed for the JGC.
I just cant find it now. I know it is there, I read it and thought I will get it when I get spotlights.
