This is my install for my iPhone using a ProClip Bracket and Holder, I modified and shortened a USB-iPhone cable to plug into the dash, works great, charges the iPhone and connects for music ect. as well..

The reason for that is a standard usb connection produces 2.5 v/ 0.5amps and a standard car charger produces 5v/1.0amps. An iPad requires 10v/2.1 amps to charge. Most double usb car adapters are sharing 1.0amps between the two sockets. You can see the problem.

You will pay around $30 in JbHiFi for a single Belkin hi power car charger (I only priced them yesterday) which is an absolute rip off. If you have a look on dealextreme you can pick up hi capacity chargers for under $10 with free shipping. I have just ordered a couple of 3.1amp dual usb car chargers from Amazon which gives one 2.1amp port and one 1.0amp port so the iphone and ipad can both charge full speed.

After researching the subject, I settled on these for my in car charging needs:

Amazon.com: Mediabridge High Output Dual USB Car Charger For iPad and iPhone (3.1 Amp): Cell Phones & Accessories

Re: WK2 Snorkel

If you can get into Jaycar, they have several adapters which have USB ports running off the auxillery power point.
One of the sits in the cupholder, and has 2 USB ports + 2 Aux power sockets. Cost around $20.

Thanks Ally,

Yes, you can get dual USB chargers at jaycar (or DSE), but the important thing is to ensure that the charger is putting out enough power. The 3.1 amp charger I linked to will output 1.0 amp to one USB port, and 2.1 amp to the second USB port even when plugged in simultaneously. Some dual port chargers claim to be 2.1 amp but if both ports are used together, the 2.1 amps is split between the two ports, which is insufficient to charge an iPad.

To further complicate matters, apple products don't conform to the standard USB charging specifications, so a charger which will work on an iPhone or iPad may not work on an android device and vice versa.

The third-generation iPad has considerably more battery capacity than the first two iPads—42.5 watt-hours, compared to 25 watt-hours—so even at the fastest rate of charging, the third-generation iPad takes noticeably longer to fully charge. Even the highest capacity car charger in the market will take longer to fully charge a third-generation iPad than either previous iPad.

The other thing to look for in a car charger is the circuitry. Good ones have ic chips that control the charging and provide over voltage protection, trickle charging when full etc. open an el cheapo and it will probably just have a glass fuse.

The charger you mentioned from Jaycar has no indication as to output. I doubt whether they would be 1amp, let alone 2.1 amp. There is a 3.1 amp dual USB charger sold by Jaycar but I steer clear of el cheapos for the reasons I have mentioned. I have no desire to fry my ipad.

Cheers
