Unhappy 02 4.7HO headgasket?

This morning when I went out to crank the jeep I had a tap coming from under the hood. I also noticed that the exhaust has a hot or burnt coolant smell to it. Oil was low on the dipstick. I am assuming that the headgaskets blew. Does anyone have any experience with this on the HO motors? Anything else I should be looking for or considering?

Next question. How hard is it to do a headgasket job on these motors? I've done it a few times on the 4.0 but never on the V8s.

Thanks for the help.
Ron

Re: 02 4.7HO headgasket?

Antifreeze in the exhaust sounds like a head gasket to me. I've never pulled the heads on a 4.7 but I know its gonna be more involved than a pushrod motor because of the timing chains running to the overhead cams. Also if you get the exhaust manifold bolts out in 1 piece use new ones for the install because they are weak to begin with. Maybe shoot Scottina06 or scjeep4.7HO a pm as they have been into their 4.7s a few times.

Re: 02 4.7HO headgasket?

your gonna have to pull those heads to make sure theres no warpage. Its no big deal to have them machined. Be sure to change the oil and antifreeze. I recommend a chiltons or haynes for the walk through

Re: 02 4.7HO headgasket?

I have to do this on my 99 this weekend, not the ho though just the 4.7.
Where can I get "special tool 8515"? is it at the local autozone? Thanks, new to the forums and found it because of this job to do!

Re: 02 4.7HO headgasket?

There is not real difference between the two as far as removal and installation. The passenger head is a PITA but the drivers side is not too bad. Main thing is to keep the chain from jumping off the idler sprocket and to put the engine on TDC #1 and make sure the crank turn so that you can get back to that point if you have too... If you need anything don't be afraid to ask.

I doubt any of the run of the mill sores will have it. Miller sells it for $66. There may be sellers on ebay with it also.

Re: 02 4.7HO headgasket?

Is it necessary to get it to keep the chain from somng off? Is there another way to do it? I won't have time to do this until next weekend soonest.
Do you think I should do both heads, or just the leaking side? Thanks for the replies

I have heard of some people making wedge shaped blocks of wood to do the same thing. Just make sure that no chips of wood come off inside.
