Unhappy 03 jeep grand cherokee limited engine speed sensor problem

My 03 jeep grand cherokee limited died on me yesterday out of no where. it was running great, i shut it off and went out to eat. When i came back out the jeep would not start. i unhooked the battery for about 2 min and viola! got the jeep home. once i drove it again it died again. i pulled the code PO725 engine speed sensor malfunction, this was the only code stored in the bank. Is their an engine speed sensor that can be replaced or is this the Ckp sensor? any info on this would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 03 jeep grand cherokee limited engine speed sensor problem

That is actually a transmission trouble code. The tranny isn't receiving the input signal. If the vehicle wasn't shutting off I would suspect a wiring issue. But since it is I too would suspect the crank position sensor. This isn't the code I would expect to see first but it could mean the same thing.

thanks for your input, sensors arent returnable so i hate to buy it and find out im wrong. do you happen to know how to test the ckp? ive heard to check for resistance in between terminal b and c but it didnt sound like this test was fool proof.

Re: 03 jeep grand cherokee limited engine speed sensor problem

I have no resistance values for the crank position sensor, but i would start cleaning the connectors of the crank position sensor, the cam position sensor and the connectors on the PCM itself.

Re: 03 jeep grand cherokee limited engine speed sensor problem

i had a 95 jeep before this one and the crank pos sensor was by the bell housing, where is it located on this 2003 jeep grand cherokee limited 4.7 because as i was just laying on my back in the garage i determined it is not in the same place?.?.

The crank position sensor is nicely hidden above the starter motor, seen from below. I think that you have even to remove the starter to get access to the sensor.
