Re: 2003 4.7L Engine Decession

Sorry Robbie ,just trying to make sure some poor new kid doesn't come on here and decide to try this on his daily driver and lose his job, income, house, wife, kids, etc.while he is sorting it all outThat being said considering your background and also your truck I'd say go all in!It would be nice if you could get a look at the donor vehicle to compare harnesses. Also there are some pics in the stickie I took of my HO wiring.Good luck bud!

Re: 2003 4.7L Engine Decession

Dave,
No apology necessary! And PLEASE by all means, keep the comments coming, because I like to have as much information as possible before I get myself involved in something like this. No doubt there will be suprise's, I just like to minimize those as much as possible.

Thanks, and have a good one.

- Robbie

How much of a performance gain do you get with doing an HO swap?

About 30 HP but you end up with a way stouter platform like a forged crank, floating wristpins, dome pistons, better bearings, intake, etc.

Sounds cool, But on a 7 year old vehicle I wouldn't invest the kind of money needed in a project like that unless I had nothing better to do.

@jrwhit04: When you created this thread, Did you mean Decision instead of Decession? lol

Re: 2003 4.7L Engine Decession

@Reichminister Nice catch......spelling isn't my strong suit, yes, decision is what I meant to say.

Now, as for why I would invest time and money into a 9 (not 7) year old vehicle, I am kinda in a position where I have to. I was trying to help my little brother out by buying this from him, knowing there was a blown head gasket, not knowing there were two scuffed cylinders. At this point, the Jeep is mine, aka I've paid for it, and now to have any chance at getting my money back, or having a nice vehicle, the beast must be fixed.

Unfortunately, my mind won't let me "just fix it", I am constantly thinking of upgrades, and since I am replacing/reparing the engine, hey why not upgrade? Also, I have priced a direct replacement AND the HO, and the HO is going to run me $200 bucks more. Seems like a no brainer, considering the situation I am in.

I would agree that you are right, if I was just sitting around looking for something to do with my time, finding a non-HO Grand Cherokee and converting it to HO is definitely not something I would consider as a good use of my time. But, considering the fact that I have to replace the engine, doing the HO upgrade is making more and more sense.

Thanks again to everyone for the info and advise, it is greatly appreciated.

- Robbie

Re: 2003 4.7L Engine Decession

On the plus side, looks like you do have a JTEC system so an HO swap won't be a massive pain to do.

Good luck with the swap/install etc. and keep us posted.

Don't worry about it, I was just curious. When I first read that I was like "Well here's a word I've never seen before" lol

I can understand the position that you're in. You only live once and the final product , if you do it, will be bad*** . I think you should go for it, just make sure you've done as much research into the subject as you can (Which I've sure you have).

@MartyP: That a new picture for your signature? If so, I'm diggin' it!

Re: 2003 4.7L Engine Decision

It sounds like you enjoy a challange. I like that! I mentioned that you might have some issues with many of the sensors and stuff, but because I have never "met the challenge" I just was not sure. Dave, cheapjeep, may be the guy you will grow to appreciate. It sure sounds like he is in the know on this one.
Maybe if this engine you have your eye on is out of a Grand Cherokee, you might be able to secure all the external sensors, wiring, ECM and so on from that Jeep. It might add to the job, but it sure would give you all the right parts without some possible troubleshooting issues. That stuff could drive you nuts. It's not like dealing with something with a carb. All this electronic stuff can make swaps very difficult.

Good Luck and keep us informed.
Dave
