2003 4.7L to 4.7L HO Conversion

Back a few weeks ago I bought a 2003 Grand Cherokee Limited with the 4.7L engine and Quadra-Drive 4x4 system. I bought it cheap from my brother, because it had a blown head gasket. Body and interior are in great shape, so my original HOPE was, throw a head gasket on it and run it for another 50 or 60 thousand miles........

I pulled the heads, to start the process, and no such luck....2 skuffed cylinders. I posed the question on here, and with all my buddies, and the consensus was rebuild what you have. So I started looking into that, and I kept running across this "HO" engine that I didn't have. This HO looked like a beast, and my performance loving nature couldn't get it out of my mind. Since I was replacing the engine anyway, and after pricing a rebuild and machine work.....I decided to drop in an 4.7L HO from a 2004 grand cherokee with 70k miles on it.

I will do my best to document the process of the swap on this thread for those who might be interested.

Again, this will document my removal of the 4.7L, and my install of the 4.7L HO and any issues I run across in the process.

Thanks to all who posted on my previous thread and helped me determine which direction I was going in.

- Robbie

Re: 2003 4.7L to 4.7L HO Conversion

Got my HO engine last week. Here are a couple pics of the engine, and one wiring difference I have found. I knew the HO engine had the knock sensors, and I was going to have to add them in order to run the HO in my non-HO WJ. I was hopeful that the connector for the knock sensors would be there hanging on my non-HO Jeep but as the pictures show.......I don't believe the connector is there.

Here's the engine:

I am pointing to the knock sensor connector:

This is the "same" junction on the non-HO wiring harness in my vehicle. I believe the connector "should" be here.

More to come soon.

I rebuilt the standard 4.7 on my 2000 GC and added 2004 H.O.cams along with a K&N CAI and i must admit it runs ALOT stronger! Next step for me is the 08 Intake along with ported TB , custom tune, and Kolak exhaust..

Summit sells an exhaust that is identical to the Kolak piece, sell the cheap turbo muffler they use for your preferred brand, save some money, and get the sound you want...

You may want to look at my manifold thread in the performance section. The 08 manifold is a nice piece but is an expensive swap and has some fitment issues.

To the OP, on jeepsunlimited there was a guy named Brian Stroud who documented a HO swap.

If you are willing to part with either one of your intake manifolds, let me know.....

Re: 2003 4.7L to 4.7L HO Conversion

Well, it's been a while since I posted, but I'm done with the install, and the Jeep is running like a dream. No check engine lights, and all sensors are hooked up and functional including the knock sensors.

I will post details later, with pictures, but to summarize the conversion:
1. I had to run the wires for the knock sensors to the PCM myself
2. I had to run the sensor ground for the knock sensors
3. I sent the PCM to Steve at B and G Performance to re-flash with his performance calibration for the H.O engine (http://www.bgperformancepcm.com/)

Having done those 3 things, when I cranked the engine over the first time, she fired right up and ran like a dream. This past weekend I finally got the beast back on the road and I am using it as my daily driver this week. So far so good.

More details to come!

Re: 2003 4.7L to 4.7L HO Conversion

Hi,

I was looking to swap my 99' non HO engine to a 2003 HO and i found your post.

I have a lot of difficulties to find the way I'll do it (I'm from Belgium and there not a lot of documentation for US cars)

If you have some pictures or other trick for the swap, wiring diagram or other, this will be very helpful

Let me know if you can help me.

Thanks a lot

Re: 2003 4.7L to 4.7L HO Conversion

SO how is it running?

I have a 116k mile non-HO with an exhaust crack... the injector just broke so when doing the fuel rail mod and swapping a set of balanced 4 hole injectors I realized how gummed up these heads are. I would rather swap on HO heads and cam than mess with the exhaust bolts.

Can I just run the cams with my Superchips tuner on the non-ho engine? If I get an HO ECU, can I use my superchips on it too?
