Unhappy 2004 Grand Cherokee Won't Start, HELP SENTRY

Hi guys,

I am in the Uk and have been reading through your forum trying to find the answer to my problem. Basically the other day I parked up my 2004 G Cherokee and went to get back in it the next day and it won't start.

At first it would run for about 3 seconds and die, now it just keeps turning over, with the alarm going all the while. I only have one key for it, so don't no if it is that, however the SKIM light does come on solidly if you leave the key in the ignition for around 30 seconds, it doesn't however come on when the vehicle is turning over.

Also my windows are not working, from any door and when I use the remote it unlocks every door but the drivers door which remains locked? I have checked all the wiring in the join of the door and it all seems to be fine.

I did however notice two wires going to the key barrel, on the door and someone mentioned it had an RF receiver in the door? However when I used a test light and multimeter on these wires there was no current going down them at all.

I can unlock the drivers door with the key but it only unlocks that door and leaves all the rest locked, and if i push the door lock button on the drivers side it does operate the lock but only for the drivers door.

I have heard someone say on one of the forums that after multiple attempts of trying to start the SKIM will lock out and you have to leave the car with the ignition on on charge for 2 hours for it to clear, is this correct?

Any Help Would be greatly appreciated, I really want to be able to enjoy my WJ once more.

Thanks In Advance

Re: 2004 Grand Cherokee Won't Start, HELP SENTRY

When you say the alarm goes of, do you mean the theft alarm?
I'm not sure if there is any difference in the setup for lefthand or righthand driven jeeps, but the RH door module (its normally named " passenger door module") has the RF receiver for the remote lock/unlock function.
I presume your jeep has righthand steering wheel, right?
The 2 wires are probably going to the lock cylinder switch. If this switch is malfunctioning, the theft alarm would not be disarmed and the SKIM will not allow to start the engine.

Re: 2004 Grand Cherokee Won't Start, HELP SENTRY

Firstly can i say many thanks for you're reply its greatly appreciated :-)

Yes the theft alarm sounds if i turn on the the ignition or if i open the bonnet and all the hazard lights flash outside the car.

Yes my jeep is right hand drive and the drivers door is on the right hand side.

If it was the rf receiver wouldn't it mean that none of the doors would respond to the remote rather than just the drivers door not opening with the remote ?

As for the lock cylinder switch is there any way of testing that ?

Also just so you guys no i have tried taking battery off overnight and charging it and checked all fuses with no effect

Many thanks again

Re: 2004 Grand Cherokee Won't Start, HELP SENTRY

So the alarm doesn´t sound as soon as you open any door?
The rf receiver is ok, otherwise it would not unlock/lock anything.
Regarding the power windows, did this start at the same time as the problem starting the engine? This could be the 50A fuse in the power distribution center under the hood otherwise.
Attached the test values for the lock switch. This same switch is used by the BCM to switch on the internal lights when unlocking the doors, so do they come on?
I have never heard of the SKIS locking out after several start attempts, but it could be.
Regarding the wiring in the rubber door boot, you can have an internal breakage with the isolation still intact. The access is quite bad, but did you try bending the wires a bit, to see if they are rigid?

Re: 2004 Grand Cherokee Won't Start, HELP SENTRY

Hello

I had the same problem as you in my 2004 WJ. The engine would start run for three seconds then die, however in my case everything else worked and no alarm sounded.

Turns out I had some cheaply made keys, (I had bought it used 2 weeks prior) They did not have the "Jeep' logo on them. I went to the dealer and turns out the bad keys messed up the entire module. I ended up spending 600$ US on a new module and two new keys.

I say tow it to the dealer and get the module changed out and key replaced.

Re: 2004 Grand Cherokee Won't Start, HELP SENTRY

Hi again,

The door wiring seems to all be fine i have tried bending door wiring and all seems fine.

The power windows did stop working when this problem started indeed, I have checked all the fuses under the hood and in the car, all are fine.

i will check door lock switch and see what its doing, the alarm goes off if you open the hood or tailgate or the doors except the drivers door which does not trigger it.

The interior lights come on when the tailgate or either rear door is opened but don't come on for either of the front doors.

@nickwj thats exactly what i'm trying to avoid :-) i dont want to find out that is the case.

Many thanks again guys.

yeah you could probably be looking at £200+ at a UK dealer.

My fob went and it cost £120 for one fob and re programming!

Re: 2004 Grand Cherokee Won't Start, HELP SENTRY

SaltyJim,

What sort of codes if any, are you showing?
1685?
I have a similar problem with my ignition which I am still to work out what it is. My 2000 WJ cuts out at times and I have worked out that the key has a bit of play in it between removing the key and acc. I can almost remove the key in acc.
This wear / play is also present when starting the jeep and sometimes wont start.
Solution was to remove all additional crap off key ring and when starting up just to be careful of how I handle the key when releasing it.
Not the greatest remedy but keeps me going until it dies and costs a packet.
1685 is a SKIM problem which maybe related to the PCM which I am hoping it is not.

I believe the 2004's are renowned for wiring problems between door and car and that the negative wiring fatigues and breaks in the rubber boot. There are several youtube clips dedicated to this problem.

Hope this is of some use to you

Re: 2004 Grand Cherokee Won't Start, HELP SENTRY

It seems that for some reason the alarm doesn´t disarm. Also when unlocking the doors, the internal lights should come on. Could be the door lock switch.
But why the drivers door doesn´t activate the alarm and power windows stopped working, i have to look further in the wiring diagram when i have some time lateron.

Re: 2004 Grand Cherokee Won't Start, HELP SENTRY

I didn't go through this with a fine tooth comb so if this is inaccurate please disregard...

If the power windows quit working I would instantly suspect driver door jamb wiring, specifically the lockout power source to the other windows but I would obviously check all other wires while I had it apart.

btw, what did you mean by "bending" the door wiring to see if it was good, if you didnt pull back the boot and check each individual wire you did NOT check it properly and quite possibly could have missed one... not that it is for sure the problem just stating that.

Re: 2004 Grand Cherokee Won't Start, HELP SENTRY

I had a problem similar to this but it was on a GM. The car would shut off because the fuel pump wouldn't run,no power windows, security light, and other interior failures that definitely weren't on the same circuits but were connected by a bcm. This bcm thing can throw you a curve when it may be something simpler. Turns out GM was using a ground distribution terminal strip under the driver side sill plate that got all corroded and melted causing intermittent and lasting failures of multiple things. iirc there were about 11 grounds that fed off of this strip.Took me a long time to find that and multiple mechanics missed it also. Now I don't know if Jeep uses anything like that and maybe 2005JGC can chime in on this but it might be something to explore. I really know what a bitch it is to troubleshoot something like this.

Re: 2004 Grand Cherokee Won't Start, HELP SENTRY

Hi Guys,

My jeep has been in the stealership for a week and at first they could get no communication from it to pull fault codes so were completely stumped.

However, yesterday I got a phone call admitting they found the problem by accident. Apparently they had two blue wj's in at the moment and the other one has a gearbox problem. One of the mechanics was told to fit a new shifter to the 'blue wj' and he did but he fitted it to mine by mistake. He then proceeded to start it right up and it ran perfectly, so the head mechanic then came out very confused and said how did you do that. He then told him the story i've just relayed to you guys.

Now the question is, is there a common fix for these 2.7 gear shifters? Because jeep are currently looking at £1000 to fit a new shifter to the car for me.
