Re: 4.0 i6 .v.s. 4.7 v8

They are both good motors. The I6 is bulletproof and you have to ignore its needs to damage it. The V8 has more power, better towing capacity, and MPG but I believe it's a little more susceptible to issues HOWEVER if you take care of it and maintain it then you shouldn't have any problems.

Bottom line it comes down to how well you maintain your engine.

My father has a 1999 F-150 7.2L Diesel and when he bought it in 1999, the dealer said he would get about 200,000 out of it. He just passed 305,000 with minimal work done (alternator, clutch, glow plugs). He changes the oil every 5,000 miles and always check fluids while fueling up.

I would say the MPG is debatable. My I6 gets better milage than both of my buddies V8s. The best I achieve was all interstate 26 mpg (calculated by hand, not overhead console). Granted that's the best I've ever gotten and I must have had a tail wind (thus not a normal mileage).

But the fact is that they are both so close in mileage, I wouldn't say either gets better MPG.

26? That's pretty good. I think my best was 22. But as you stated, your I6 gets better then some V8s and I know some V8s that get better then I6. It depends on the motor, the driver and how aggressive they drive. The difference between doing 75 and 70 doesn't seem very large but it adds up.

Overall, its a minute difference.

Re: 4.0 i6 .v.s. 4.7 v8

You should try doing a search on here for this topic...I know there is an older thread on this topic as well.

I've had 2 4.0L's in my day...in a TJ and in an XJ. I loved them...great motors, but not nearly as fun as the 4.7L. Can't blame a guy for wanting a HO...ahhahahah.

I would not go back to the 4.0 after driving the 4.7. But that's just me....

I have a 4.7 that has 295,000 original miles. You can't say the 4.7 is a bad engine. It has been abused also from towing a bass boat most of the year. Very reliable.

I have a 4.7 HO with 140,000 miles also runs like a dream. It's the rest of the car that can't keep up with age, not the engine. Always thought the engine was awesome. Simply followed factory maintenance to a tee and popped the hood open to listen for irregularities whenever I could.
