4LO problems

As winter has now arrived in proper fashion I have become painfully aware of the problem with my 4LO...

Whenever I try and shift my 1999 Grand Cherokee limited into 4LO it will kick back out and refuse to engage properly, more recently it will not go all the way down into 4LO without a LOT of pressure, and then once it does it will grind and kick the shifter forwards.

Read somewhere that it could be a "rusty shift lever linkage" - could it be as simple as a little grease?

4 All Time works fine and I have never had any other issues with the jeep, but since I got it, it just has not shifted into 4LO.

Has anyone seen this problem before or have any ideas on how to correct it?

Thanks in Advance guys!

Maybe a stupid question here, but do you have your gear selector (the one that goes in P, N, D, 2, etc) in Neutral?

I know my Jeep won't go into 4Lo w/out being in neutral first (but it will go into 4 All Time and 4 Part Time). If I try and it's not in neutral, it'll grind and do bad things (only tried it once before I knew what to do).

I have the QuadraDrive version (T-case NV247)

Yes the transmission is in neutral.

Yes I have done it rolling approx 5 km/h as well as stopped.

I haven't tried holding the brake as that seems counter-intuitive to rolling at approx 2-3 mph.

No I would never drive down the street with 4LO on, but having a chevy pull me out of the ditch is embarrassing, so I need to get the 4Lo working.

I tried it a few more times today, I am getting it into 4LO no problem, (tranny in N pull back through N to 4LO, then put in drive) but it will either kick the selector out of 4LO or make a grinding sound if I try and hold it in.

Also, I can still move forward while holding the selector in 4LO, but the grinding continues and the Jeep is clearly not operating properly, and certainly does not have 4LO working right.

I have a 99 with the 247 and the same problem shifting into low would make a grinding and popping sound. I opened up the T case and found the teflon ring on the shifting fork was destroyed. I also found a straw to a spray can in the T case. At that point I decided to replace the entire case with a rebuilt one in fear that the progressive coupler was destroyed as well. Got a rebuilt one for 862.00.

When the T-case is in neutral does the T-case shifter line up with the neutral marking on the console? If not you probably have a linkage adjustment issue. Maybe even try to bias the linkage adjustment toward the low range side to see if it will stay in. If that doesn't work then it might be time to look deeper:( Hope not.

It seems to line up fine, so I'm starting to think the t-case is the problem. I am going to try and check the fluid tomorrow and if it is fine I might try and pull the transfer case and have a look inside it.

So if anyone else has any advice on how not to destroy my t-case while inspecting the internals please feel free to chime in :)

Is there anything on the t-case that needs to be replaced when you crack it open? gaskets or seals?

Pretty new to the 4x4 world, so not really sure what to expect, just figure I can pick out obvious damage if it exists. Might break down and take it in if the fluid doesn't help the problem.

Just to keep this up to date.

The Service Manual I just got my hands on has this problem specifically identified.
The manual offers four possible causes for "NOISY IN—OR JUMPS OUT OF 4WD LOW RANGE"

1. Transfer case not completely engaged in 4WD LOW (possibly from shift to 4LO while rolling)
2. Shift linkage loose, binding, or is misadjusted
3. Range fork cracked, inserts worn, or fork is binding on shift rail
4. Annulus gear or lockplate worn or damaged

So I guess I'll be looking at these things when I get the chance.
