Re: 9 deg outside wj hard start

The front (kickdown) band adjusting screw is
located on the left side of the transmission case
above the manual valve and throttle valve levers.

(1) Raise vehicle.
(2) Loosen band adjusting screw locknut (Fig. 69).
Then back locknut off 3-5 turns. Be sure adjusting
screw turns freely in case. Apply lubricant to screw
threads if necessary.
(3) Tighten band adjusting screw to 8 Nm (72 in.
lbs.) torque with Inch Pound Torque Wrench
C-3380-A, a 3-in. extension and appropriate Torxy
socket.
CAUTION: If Adapter C-3705 is needed to reach the
adjusting screw, tighten the screw to only 5 Nm
(47-50 in. lbs.) torque.
(4) Back off front band adjusting screw 3 turns.
(5) Hold adjuster screw in position and tighten
locknut to 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.) torque.
(6) Lower vehicle.
REAR BAND
The transmission oil pan must be removed for
access to the rear band adjusting screw.

(1) Raise vehicle.
(2) Remove transmission oil pan and drain fluid.
(3) Loosen band adjusting screw locknut 5-6 turns
(Fig. 70). Be sure adjusting screw turns freely in lever.
(4) Tighten adjusting screw to 8 Nm (72 in. lbs.)
torque.
(5) Back off adjusting screw 4 turns.
(6) Hold adjusting screw in place and tighten locknut
to 34 Nm (25 ft. lbs.) torque.
(7) Position new gasket on oil pan and install pan
on transmission. Tighten pan bolts to 17 Nm (13 ft.
lbs.) torque.
(8) Lower vehicle and refill transmission with
Mopart ATF +4, type 9602, fluid.

Taken verbatim from the FSM.

Re: 9 deg outside wj hard start

My 4.0L XJ used to start sluggishly like that in the winter...a new starter, Optima battery, and oversized battery and starter cables from jeepersandcreepers.com fixed it. It always started though. Just depends how much it bothers you.

Re: 9 deg outside wj hard start

Cold weather has several negative influences on any car. First of all the engine oil becomes more thick, causing more drag to overcome by the startermotor. Also the capacity of the battery goes down, making it even more difficult to start. Older batteries will present more problems and turn the engine more slowly and batteries at the end of their lifes will just not start the engine anymore.
Glad that im not living in a cold country anymore.

The engine oil becoming thicker should be mostly (but not completely) overcome by the dual viscosity of modern motor oil. If you live where it's really cold, change to a lower winter weight motor oil during the winter.

Re: 9 deg outside wj hard start

I just cleaned it off, i'm takin her out later to test the prowess now that I have my front driveshaft back. This snow is much heavier than the blizzard we got in december tho.

are you in Brooklyn or queens?
everyone puts snow everywhere they can. but since your jeep is on the left side at least the plow wont put more snow on the side of thr jeep.

might want to get your batter check at autozone for free and alternator if you can.

good looking wj

Re: 9 deg outside wj hard start

Seasoned NYer speakin there, when it snows park on the left for sure! My jeep def performed up to expectations today, first time I took it out in snow since Ive owned it.

I'd stay away from autozone, I once too a battery there that was good but just drained, they supposedly charged it and it failed the test. I put it on a shop charger and am using the battery to this day.
