'99 Oil Pressure Gauge

When I turn the key to the on position in my '99 WJ, the oil pressure raises to about 20 PSI. That is before the engine is running.

Is that normal? If it isn't, how do I fix it?

Re: '99 Oil Pressure Gauge

I think with the WJ you can hold your odometer button in and turn the key on and it will to a cluster self test actuating all the lamps and sweeping all the gauges... if the oil pressure guage is functional with this test (not 100% sure it works on the WJ) then you may be looking at an oil pressure sender or circuit fault.

Hmmm. I will have to do a little Googling on that cluster test.

Re: '99 Oil Pressure Gauge

My first guess would be the pressure sender, then the guage or circuit. Is it the 4.0L or the 4.7?

Re: '99 Oil Pressure Gauge

Ok then I believe the pressure sender is right next to the oil filter, sticking out almost in your way when changing the filter. I broke mine when changing the filter on my old ZJ, the pressure guage would peg out for a few days until I replaced it. Very easy to do, one wire connector and unscrew it from the housing.

I hope it is, good luck let us know if it helps! Did you try the guage cluster test?

I did the instrument cluster test and everything went up and down like it should move.

I am going to swap the sending unit tomorrow and see how that works.

Re: '99 Oil Pressure Gauge

I swapped out the oil pressure sensor and it fixed the problem. Glad it wasn't something more than the sender.
