Guys,

I just had my new exhaust installed at a custom shop near my house in VA. These guys are incredible. My exhaust looks like artwork, not auto work.

It is an East Coast Custom shop, but they know jeeps, and it is an awesome place to get work done. The link is below. They have a show filmed there as well. If you go, ask for Tom or Bubba, you will be very happy with the work. Not to mention, they have some of the coolest muscle cars in the bays...

I get nothing from this, just trying to pass along a real Gem of a shop...

What muffler? Size? Video?

Pepper:

Kolak Performance 3" exhaust components (Magnaflow high flow converter, Magnaflow large case muffler, mandrel bent tailpipe)

Will get video soon. I remove the flowmaster 50 to put on the magnaflow big box. Made it a bit more quiet, but not really, wifey is still #$Y#)Q@*#)*! when I pull in...Not a bad thing!

Wow that does look clean, I have to redo my exhaust since the welding was half assed . The guy refused to use a pipe adapter but somehow welded a 2.25 pipe to a 2.5 one, it looks shoddy though so maybe in the future I'll look into some new pipe.

sleepy, on my list of things! I was gonna have them do it, but did not want to wait, will do it this weekend...

Next is the upcountry springs and shocks this weekend as well.
Talk to Hannes about what coating he used....I used VHT flameproof and it not only came out lighter than intended, but it's starting to flake off as well. I have to re-do it when it comes back from the shop.

the shop that installed your Kolak exhaust could hook you up....or you may find one from a stock exhaust here. There are also lots of aftermarket resonators

$125/hour, which is higher than I like to pay, but they won't charge for all of the hours. Not to mention that their work is so perfect, I have no issue paying for it.

You should check it out, the shop is amazing, especially the cars...They have about 15 or 20 in various stages.

BTW, I am going to clean up and sell my original Kolak 3" cat-back that was on there. I switched from Flowmaster to magnaflow, and just decided to start over clean...

Resonators typically are not needed with the correct muffler. Not on a WJ anyways.

What year is your WJ Ben? I can't use my '02 as an example, but my buddy Brian's (NJWJ on this site, he is a lurker) '04 (with the 2 large precats and no main cat) had resonance issues with the Magnaflow large case (5x11x22) which should be the same as what you have. He ended up re-doing the exhaust with IIRC the same Magnaflow muffler and then a small spintech muffler before it. His is very quiet now, but he is happy with it. The '04s are notorious for drone issues, because they changed the catalytic converter arrangement.

I'd look into throwing in a small Magnaflow muffler upstream of the 5x11x22 to act as a resonator.

Ryan,

1st of all, thanks for the help, and I want one of your throttle bodies...

2nd, I have an '02, with the pre-cats, and i just installed the high-flow Kolak cat, and the magnaflow big box. I am about to rip it out. I don't think there is enough room to add another muffler upstream??

Thanks, Ben

Ben,

You're welcome. Glad to help.

That is really strange that you are having resonance issues with an '02. I'm wondering if perhaps you have another issue that is causing the nasty drone, like a ill-placed hanger. Either that, or maybe your sense of hearing is much more sensitive than most. Exhaust is a very subjective thing and a setup that is perfect to one person might make another person rip their hair out due to overall noise/tone/resonance, etc.

I ran a 5x8x18 Magnaflow (which is essentially one step more aggressive than yours) behind a Carsound cat and honestly it wasn't loud enough. With that being said, I did feel at times like it resonated more than it should have, especially stop and go around town type of driving. Oddly enough, I switched to the smallest round muffler Magnaflow sells and although it is WAY louder, I am much happier with the sound in all modes of driving.

I would think there has to be some way to add a larger muffler upstream. You should be able to fit a 30" Magnaflow.

Please contact me via PM about the Ported TB.

I just ordered Kolak's exhaust for my '01 4.7L. He did a special run of stainless steel tailpipes over Christmas for V8 WJ's & ZJ's. The fact that his exhaust wasn't available in stainless was the only thing that had been holding me back. I'm trying to decide which magnaflow muffler and tip to get. How loud is the large case Magnaflow? Nick said it's not that loud, and that was his recommendation based primarily upon the fact I want a 100% stainless exhaust. I'm 40, and not looking to wake the neighbors. I'm not to happy to hear about the drone, but it seems that one man's drone could be music to another man's ears. Is there any noticeable performance improvement? I hear some people have experienced a 1-2 mpg increase with the exhaust.

I'm going to have to find someone local to do the install. I'm not familiar with any exhaust shops in the Lansing, Michigan area, and I really don't want to end up with a $hitty install.

The large case magnaflow is not loud at all. I am extremely surprised to hear about Ben's drone issue.

There is a performance improvement with the 3" exhaust. The 4.7 responds very well to a free-flow setup.

No, this is drone. I replace the Flowmaster 70 with the Magnaflow large case, to reduce the noise. It is not pleasant to be in any longer. I am a big fan of throaty, but when I want it, not when creeping through my neighborhood, pulling up to a restaurant, or merely going up a hill. Not knocking Nick at all, he is terrific, just need to fix it.

Dunno how it missed this thread..lol!

The work does look amazing!! Welds are nice and clean, and it looks solid, just like you said!

If you want it coated, Dupli-Color Engine Enamel is the way to go in my eyes. They have plenty of colors.

I'm looking forward to the exhaust. It will probably be sometime this summer before I get it and actually have it installed. I'm glad he finally did a run of tailpipes in stainless steel.

I've purchased several things from Nick, and my experiences thus far have always been positive. He's always been very responsive. I just installed the Stillen brake setup over Christmas.
