Re: Custom exhaust installed, new custom shop found in NOVA!

I had my exhaust installed Thursday. I had them cut the old exhaust off right at the merge of the y-pipe. I ordered a 4 foot piece of 3" 304 stainless tubing that they used to patch from the y-pipe to the cat, and from the cat to the muffler. I went with the Magnaflow large case because I wanted a 100% stainless system.

When the guy started it right after the install, you could tell a huge difference in the exhaust note. It definitely sounds like a V8, in a muscle car kind of way. I have to say, it's a bit louder, particularly inside the vehicle, than I was expecting. I hope I get used to that.

My '01 also appeared to have cats coming off both manifolds, in addition to a cat before the muffler. I do like the way the exhaust sounds, but it's definitely louder inside the cabin at cruising speeds than I was expecting. I hope I get used to that, or that it mellows out a bit after the exhaust gets some miles on it.

??? That large case is pretty mellow, even having ridden in one of the drone-happy '04s with a Kolak system I can say they are relatively quiet.

When you say cruising speeds, you mean on the highway in OD ? All my Magnaflow setups were particularly loud in-cabin from 35-45, before going into OD.

Yeah, I'm talking about on the highway at about 70 mph. I believe the rpm's are right around 2K at that speed. The muffler is the Magnaflow 12589. I haven't been on the higway with it much since the install, but the drive back from the exhaust shop was approximately 50 miles. It certainly seems louder in the cabin at 70mph than it does at 35-45. It may just take some getting used to. That would be my only complaint at the moment. Aside from that, I like the way it sounds.

70mph , or 2000 rpms, is where the resonance will be worst, regardless of muffler.

I think running a tailpipe all the way out back has alot to do with in-cabin resonance on the WJ. I ran a open Y pipe that exited just aft of the trans crossmember for a few days, and even though it was DEAFENING outside, it was quieter in-cabin than with a full exhaust. If I had to do it over again, I may not have run a tailpipe at all if I could get away with it.

It's kind of a bummer. I hope it either gets better, or that I get used to it. If it becomes a problem, I guess I could get some sound deadening material.

He hasn't been on for a while. I have heard good things and bad things from that shop. They are a little pricey though.
