Drowned 2002 4.7ltr

I put my 2002 Grand in water yesterday, I had already been through it once on and on the way back missed the line and just took it over the bonnet. End result was that it stalled but I was able to start it again and it was running very rough and making quite bad knocking noises. We were in deep bush and as it would drive i took it out - amazingly it went up a massive mud hill on the way. Anyhow on the way home on the highway it was ok but couldnt do over 70kms without vibrating badly. The engine light was on and only flashed when it got under load. I have it booked in for a service later in the week but am interested in the view of the forum......???

Re: Drowned 2002 4.7ltr

Probably got Water in some of the Cylinders causing misfires, and the Air Filter maybe/is soaked. Possibly more thing with it!

air filter was soaked, took it out, any views on if the engine is stuffed or just needs a full service?

Re: Drowned 2002 4.7ltr

I can NOT believe you tried to start that engine if the filter was soaked. Whatever damage was done is done. In the future, if you run any engine into water that is over the filter, turn the engine off IMMEDIATLY. Then get someone else to pull the vehicle out of the water. Then pull the filter and check if it's wet. If so, look for water in the TB. If wet, pull the intake and look for water there. If water there, pray that you killed the engine in time. Then pull the plugs and turn the engine by hand w/ a bar. Water does NOT like to compress. I went wheeling a couple weeks ago and a guy did the same thing to his XJ. Water over the hood, stalled engine, filter soaked. Here's a couple pictures from the tear down:

After he started getting pulled out.

Bend Rod:

Hole in Block:

Hopefully you didn't do anything to the extent he did (bent/broke 3 out of 6 connecting rods and hole in block). But you could have anything from a wet sensor to bent rods or crank.

Re: Drowned 2002 4.7ltr

I am sorry, but if your motor was shut off by water your SOL dude. Especially if its still running like crap. Absolute best case senario you dropped a couple valve seats due to a hot engine sucking in cold water and that cold water hitting those seats.

Worst case senario and quite likely is that you did whats in the pictures above.

I doubt you did like I posted. His engine wouldn't even turn over w/ the starter, was VERY hard to turn by hand, and we heard the rod drop into the pan.

You might have a bent rod or crank. But I doubt there's a hole in the block.

Re: Drowned 2002 4.7ltr

just got the verdict back, only 3 cylinders working, havent pulled it down yet, it appears that insurance will cover it though which is a start, looks like a snorkel might be the go with the new engine....
