Re: Engine cooling fan 4.7 HO

OK so this is a different fan then the one that comes with 2002-2004 Grand Cherokee's with the fan/clutch combo? My sisters is a 2002 L6 4.0L and has a mechanical fan with a clutch, and I thought it was the same.

Re: Engine cooling fan 4.7 HO

Can I get a site with pictures or something of this fan setup? I am interested to see what it looks like.

Re: Engine cooling fan 4.7 HO

Ya its different to say the least, but yet totally cool. I have the same hydraulic set up on my 04 overland and yes it does turn slowly most of the time, but trust me when its ready this thing will spin like crazy ! Two summers ago I towed a mustang over the grapevine in 90 to 100 degree heat, and when i pulled into the rest area and left the jeep running I noticed that the fan cut on and was really pumping. I looked at the temp gauge and it just barley moved up from its normal operating position. The system seams to work vary good, so if were you I would spend more time admiring it and less time worrying about it. The only other car Ive seen this type of setup on was an 06 infinity M45, and there are probably more out there like it. Stay COOL bro!

Re: Engine cooling fan 4.7 HO

Not to thread jack but is it possible to add this to a 4.0L 6 99 WJ? I already have the electric plastic fan and just added the mechanical fan connected to the water pump...

Since you already added the Mech and the stock electric you should be good to go. Maybe install a 180* T stat.

Re: Engine cooling fan 4.7 HO

Here is some info from the JEEP manual regarding the hydraulic fan operation:

The hydraulic radiator cooling fan used on the 4.7L
engine replaces both the electric fan and the engine
driven mechanical fan. This provides 4.7L equipped
vehicles with heavy trailer towing capability while at
the same time reducing unnecessary power drain on
both the engine and the vehicles electrical system.
HYDRAULIC FAN STRATEGY
The hydraulic radiator cooling fan is controlled by
the JTEC. A PWM (Pulse With Modulated) signal
from the JTEC controls the fan speed. There are four
inputs to the JTEC that determine what speed percentage
of fan is required by the vehicle. These
inputs are:
Engine Coolant Temperature

Transmission Oil Temperature

Battery Temperature

A/C System Pressure
By monitoring these four parameters, the JTEC
can determine if cooling airflow is required. If airflow
is required, the JTEC will slowly ramp up (speed up)
the fan speed until the parameter(s) are under control.
Once the temperature or pressure is reduced to
within operating parameters the fan will ramp up,
ramp down, or hold its speed to maintain the temperature
/ pressure requirements.

NOTE: Even if the JTEC is not requesting fan on
operation the fan blade will usually spin between
100 and 500 RPM when the vehicle is at idle. This is
due to a controlled minimum oil flow requirement
through the fan drive motor.

Re: Engine cooling fan 4.7 HO

OK so if I want to put the ARB bar on my 99 WJ 4.0 L6 do I NEED this setup or will the electric fan/mechanical fan combo work fine? It says on the ARB site upgrade 99-2000 WJ's with the hydraulic cooling from a 2001+...

I doubt your steering box or steering pump are setup to run this hydraulic fan. If you install whatever you want and there are no cooling issues you should be good to go. So unless you want to redo your entire cooling system and steering system i would leave well enough alone.
