Engine swap

I currently have the 4.0l I6 in my 03 WJ. What all would it take to swap it out for a 4.0L HO? price estimates? places I can find the necessary parts?

Re: Engine swap

A lot more money than its worth. Just my 2 cents worth sorry but either version of the 4.0 is still a little underpowered for the heavy GC. You could always try to swap in a 4.7L HO V8, but that would require a 545rfe tranny and also a lot of work.

Re: Engine swap

Not worth the time or the money. Bore it .040 over, throw in a ported head & intake, new cam....even crank if you want and you're torque will be improved 100+hp. I didnt do the intake or crank, (i should have) but on my 95 WK with the 4.0, pretty much the same motor, it increased my power significantly. Cost me $1500 to do it my self. And then i blew the motor because it overheated and my Temp gauge wasnt working. (my fault) But it was definitely stronger while it lasted. In the process of rebuilding again.

Re: Engine swap

so you're wanting to go from the 6 to an 8.... thats a bit more detailed. 70 Hp and 100ft lbs of torque difference. Again.... for the price you're going to pay for swapping, engine mounts, tranny etc. you're looking at 6-7 grand would be my guess. If you do all the work yourself, thats different. Go forced Induction and call it a day!
Here is a good place to start with either a stroker or FI.

Re: Engine swap

BTW here is where i got my rebuild kit a couple years ago. It was nice because you just tell them what size you want everything (rings, cam etc) and they send it to you at no extra charge. And you cant beat the price.

Re: Engine swap

What would you recommend, a stoker or FI? If I choose to stay with the I6 that rebuild kit would be my best bet in terms of improving performance?

Re: Engine swap

FI would be the easiest. Bolt it on and you're done. Now how good of shape is your I6 in? You can beat the crap out of those motors and they keep running. I would say go F/I, run it until somethin breaks, then you can get the rebuild kit, build a fresh new motor, strap the blower back on be good for another 100K.

Looks like your engine is already FI. What are you trying to accomplish? Have you considered trading yours in on one with a V8?
