Have you cleaned your throttle body lately?

OK so I am sitting around bored waiting on my Diablo tuner and cai for the 07 WK and decided to do a little tune up work on the wife's 01 WJ. Started with cleaning and oiling the k&n filter which wasn't all that dirty. But when I pulled the intake hose off the the throttle body, even I wasn't prepared for the crap inside. Now I clean my TBs religiously every 30k miles so here's what can accumulate in that many mostly city miles!

Tomorrow it is an oil change, tire rotation, replace the spark plugs and changing the front & rear diff lube. Just rebuilt the tranny and serviced the tcase in the last 2 weeks so that's good to go. After all this it ought to run good as new. Well at least as close to new as any vehicle pushing 200k miles of middle-aged, female driving.

Re: Have you cleaned your throttle body lately?

I'm going to clean my TB when I do my spark plugs in a few weeks. The manual says not to clean the TB, but screw that, if there's crap in there, I'm removing it!

Good work!

Re: Have you cleaned your throttle body lately?

Far be it from me to tell anyone what they should or shouldn't do with their own Jeep. But if I had one with 180k miles and knew the tb had never been cleaned? I'd be headed out to the garage with an old tooth brush and can of tb cleaner asap.

Re: Have you cleaned your throttle body lately?

And to add... if the TB is that dirty, it may be worth the look to check out all of the intake/filter components (tubing) and clean that as well.

Maybe incase you screw up a sensor or something in the process? Aside from that I don't know, I mean theres not much that can go wrong is there...

Great job on the TB though Joe, looks brand new again!

Re: Have you cleaned your throttle body lately?

I cleaned mine a few weeks ago after around 35,000 miles. Not as dirty as yours but I was suprised how much black gunk was in there.

Re: Have you cleaned your throttle body lately?

most say dont clean it because of the new electronic throttle bodys. i just did mine i removed it then used a fine grit sand paper to remove all the black gunk. if you do clean it its best to remove it. that way when you use an aerosol cleaner it doesnt just leak it down into your manifold. if you have an electronic one and want to use a liquid cleaner just be careful with using to much, and keep from spraying it into the hole on the side that leads to the little motors and such.

Guess what I just cleaned mine and it wasn't that bad! I'll get a picture later it's too dark outside.
