help...2001 jeep grand cherokee

i am having trouble with my jeep. it idles rough at times for no apparent reason. i did a bg fuel injection service and changed the fuel filter cause the jeep has 160,000 miles on it. the car was having these issues before i did the fi service. in fact, the reason i did the service was to try and fix this problem. i also removed the iac and cleaned it and removed the throttle body and cleaned that too. any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you

Re: help...2001 jeep grand cherokee

You can better put your technical questions into the WJ forum, more people will see it there.
But after all you have done already, i would say the TPS is causing this. If you have a scanner, you could see the TPS position, and if its fluctuating, you found the problem. It seems that you could also wiggle a bit with the TPS and if the rpm changes, TPS is faulty.
Did you check for any set DTC?

Re: help...2001 jeep grand cherokee

DTC P0320 Ignition/Distributor Engine Speed Input Circuit Malfunction.

The ignition engine speed sensor input signal to PCM is continuously monitored. The test fails when the signal indicates that two successive erratic profile ignition pickup (PIP) pulses have occurred.

Probable cause:

  • Loose wires/connectors. (check the connectors on the crank and cam sensors)
  • Arcing secondary ignition components (coils and plugs)
  • On board transmitter (2-way radio)

Re: help...2001 jeep grand cherokee

P0320 - No crankshaft reference signal at pcm

your problem is likely the crankshaft position sensor itself... pretty common failure causing a dieout and it can be intermittant before it goes out.

The rough idle is likely your tps, Also a VERY common problem that rarely throws a code and typically when it does throw a code its not for the tps it throws injector circuit faults (uses the same analog to digital converter in the pcm and can cause feedback leading to these codes).

Good luck!

Re: help...2001 jeep grand cherokee

i replaced the tps today and it still has the same problem. it doesn't do it all the time. but sometimes the car will stall when i'm stopped or the rpm's will go down to about 400 and then shoot up to 2,000...any suggestions? i am also going to replace the crankshaft position sensor tomorrow at school to see if that will clear the p0320 code. thank you all for your help.

Re: help...2001 jeep grand cherokee

replace the crankshaft position sensor, it could be in intermittant signal that is causing it to die (drop in rpms) but picks the signal up before it completely kills the motor which will cause a spike in rpm. Not that this is for sure the issue, but I would agree with your plan on replacing the ckp befor further idle diag.
